Anyone know what this clutch noise is?

hey guys

i have a 2013 86 that has been having some clutch issues this week.

its now harder to change gears unless you rev match, and the gears grind sometimes.

i noticed there is a noise when i depress the clutch, but only when the engine is running.

anyone know what it might be? maybe the TOB going bad?

cheers, rob

More then likely that’s your issue, very common issue.

Surely you'll figure it out when you are replacing the clutch...very soon

Does not sound to me like throwout bearing noise....though you'll surely be replacing TOB when doing the clutch.
Could it be because most material is missing from the clutch disc...

Appears maybe the steering wheel might also be on the wrong side of the car.

Howdy popsicle and welcome to ye ol forum -

How many miles on your machine?

Is it the OEM clutch?

I agree, something ain't right about your clutch. In the meantime, while you're waiting to get your clutch innards replaced, you may consider bleeding the clutch system - maybe you will get lucky -

hey humfrz

there are 55,000 miles on the clock

i bought the car 6000 miles ago -- it was serviced just before i bought it, they replaced the gear oil, so maybe it was having trouble changing gears back then??

i'm guessing its the stock TOB and clutch.

cheers, rob

In your video, while the engine was running, was the clutch engaged and left engaged?

If so, I'll go with "there is something lose in there" theory.

Maybe one of the fingers on the pressure plate is sticking - I just made that up to see if ol @Ultramaroon and ol @Tcoat are payen attention -

Try releasing the clutch slowly like you're about to start creeping in first, except be in neutral and listen for the transmission gears to start spinning. Does it still click?

thx for the reply

i took it for a drive today to the local supermarket, about 30 mins away.

it was driving better after it warmed up, but still not great.

i did notice a couple of times when taking off it did jump a small amount a couple of times.

i did your test and if i move the clutch out as i normally would when pulling away in first it still makes the noise, just quieter. if i let the clutch out really really slowly i can get it not make the noise.

cheers, rob

There are only a couple places that will clunk or pop. In your case, my money's on a friction disc going bad. That's a tough call to make based purely on sound but that's where I'm leaning. I'm not sure what you mean by "jump." It could also be the throwout bearing hanging up on the quill. Do you feel it letting go in your pedal?

Either way, both of those are under the bell housing. Will need to drop the transmission to inspect and repair.

thx for your thoughts

by jump i meant, the clutch grabbing and slipping (maybe) causing the car to jump forward a little bit, even when i was letting the clutch out slow.

cheers, rob

Neither the sound nor the described symptoms appear to be TOB related. I am with you on the disk it's self.

hi everyone

well i took it in to have the clutch replaced. the mechanic installed an exedy standard clutch, machined the fly wheel, replaced the TOB with genuine toyota, replaced the gear oil with motul 300, replaced the fork with genuine toyota.

unfortunately it has not made the gear box as smooth as i had hoped. second is still an effort to get into, and i have to double clutch it at low speeds for the first 20mins of driving, it's fine at 4000rpm.

the noise shown in the original video of this thread is still there, so i have no idea what it could be??

and now i seem to have another problem. there seems to be some plate grinding noise where before there was none -- this may just be the new clutch, so i would appreciate your thoughts on it.

in the below video im going up into a corner that then goes straight down. i approach the corner at around 50kmh in third, but dont drop down to second as im going straight back to 50 as soon as i am around the corner. you can hear when i go around the corner there is some clutch/plate grinding noise (00:10). the car never made this noise with the old clutch. any thoughts? maybe i just need to learn to drive differently with the new clutch, kick the clutch in round corners -- never had to do that in any of my other cars though.

EDIT: oh and when i got it back from the mechanic and was still having trouble getting into second, i checked the clutch fluid and it was really dirty, so i bled the clutch line and replaced with with castrol react dot 4 -- that made it a bit better getting into second, still not great though. does everyone have this problem with second on the gearbox?

cheers, rob

Well, hell, replacing all of those things should have fixed about everything.

Maybe your new clutch disk just needs some time to break in.

As far as smooth shifting, especially into second, that plagues a lot of drivers on this forum. The only thing I can suggest is to adjust your shifting technique till you get the timing "right".

It is possible to shift this transmission UP through the gears, without using the clutch and not grinding the gears. Timing is everything -

I hope your shifting smooths out for you.

Yes. You've already learned how to work around it with the double clutching. You're good to go.
