New 2017 86 owner*! Thoughts on new front end?

Just saying hey. Had the car for just under a year now but never posted cuz.. i forgot. Anyway, since the refresh has been out for a while now I've been curious about how people still feel about the front end of the Toyota specifically. I've been indifferent before but after i saw the car in person I started to prefer the new face over the others. Plus an employee discount also swayed me over the Subaru.

I got lots of plans for mods but nothing set in stone cuz of money (tools ain't cheap yo), though I have plans on making my own custom 4-2-1 el headers with some help from coworkers.

I’ve had mine for a full year and think that depending on the angle, the front end looks either acceptable or wretched. Mostly wretched imo. The weird thing is, I get a lot of compliments on the car (even the front end) and the car has started a lot of conversations. I still don’t like it that much and think about either doing TRD lip kit or TOMS front bumper.

I should’ve just gotten a BRZ.

The original blue press photos of the refresh surprised me when they first came out:

(the lighting definitely didn't help though..).

I felt sort of indifferent about it at first but LOVE the front end now. I saw a white 2017, face to face, across an intersection one time when I was driving and knew I had to have one!

I agree, there are some angles that do take getting used to (although I can also say the same for the old bumper..those geometric CHEEKS on the sides!) but I think it's cool that there's NO other front end of a car out now that looks like it (maybe because its too bold and polarizing) and while i think the original front end has held up well and to me will continue to be timeless, I love the the little details toyota took to make tthe new front end a little more "grown up" (DLR and turn signals all in one tight and sharper birdlike headlight unit, 86 logo inside those headlights, canards, bigger air opening, way more swoopier and dynamic, no chubby cheeks!) and aggressive.

Also really like that you don't need an aftermarket front bumper to make it aggressive...seeing how it's already got freakin' fangs.
Some say that the looks don't match the car which I kind of agree with but from a personal standpoint one of the reasons why I chose this new front end over the old and both old and new brz's is because there really isn't too much going on with those models up front. They're clean! but maybe TOO clean for me...Plus i just like weird looking things I guess?

Also, it's crazy how much the lower lip looks like it sticks out (above) and DOESN't stick out (below) at certain angles. Part of the more dynamic and complex curves that i like about this new bumper! There's so many more lines and angles happening at different points of view on the bumper (and just in the "mustache"itself too!) that its almost shapeshifting/two different cars!

That shot of the red 86 reminds me of this old NSX picture...

I'm not a fan of the new bumper, but the 86 looks great in that picture.

I love it but it's mostly the reactions of the people on the street that are telling. People are slowing down on the highway, honking and giving me thumbs up, random people approach me when I'm pulled over to compliment it. I see people pointing and staring from the sidewalk, passenger seats. It's crazy. I realize it's mostly due to the lowered stance, the paint matched SARD style wing and the fender winglets, not to mention the amazing shade of red, but it's also the styling. LEDs help with the high end look as well.

The refreshed front end looks GREAT IMO. The new headlights on the 2017+ 86/BRZ give it a much higher end look too.

Looks more refined and grown up compared to the FRS face.

IMO:

13-16 standard FRS face = cheap looking, boy racerish.
13-16 FRS face with the LED strip DRL headlights = More upscale, still somewhat boy racerish.
17+ 86 face = more mature, refined, upscale, not as boy racerish. Bit more shark/ninja turtle looking at certain angles though.

BRZ = all years look pretty much the same. 17+ gets new headlights and the area around the foglights is pretty much the only major change that I can see.
(Yeah I know this was somewhat of a thread necro...but I wasn't the one who did it lol)

To my eye it looks good up close at a angle you are staring down the car
From a distance when you see it I find it looks pretty bad.

I really wanted a BRZ and ended up with a 86. In person I find that it looks far more attractive and it has REALLY grown on me.

Compared to the old FRS, the new bumper looks a lot more defined and has more personality. The slightly more aggressive design definitely helped catch my eye when I was doing my initial research on the car and since owning it. I love staring at the front end of it. Seeing other people's pictures of older ft86 models and their OEM bumpers, the bumper always seemed a little empty from the front, and sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the smooth curves on the sides of the car. Too blocky and stiff.

The newer one simply has a great profile. Not to mention that it's unique; I can pick it out and easily point out and say "that's an 86." The old bumper however, just looks extraordinarily plain and blends in with the numerous other common cars on the road.
