They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To

I don't know how many times people have tried to convince me that the old cars were safer because they were bigger and heavier then modern ones.
Having seen many crash tests in person I knew they were wrong but that didn't change their outlook.
Which car would you rather be in?

Seen this a long time ago. It was an eye-opener. Having tested the effectiveness of seat belts and crumple zones, um, "in the field," I can confirm intelligent design trumps raw mass.

Always felt that statement really applied to audio equipment.

Was listening to some Pioneer speakers a few days ago, the Elite series they like to call it. Didn't sound all that great. I have a set of Pioneer speakers from the 70's, the CS-R700's, these were the first pioneer products they ever sold in the U.S., they sound amazing to this day. Everything is still original. A lot of the new hi-fi equipment sounds too bright, they don't focus enough on neutral sound hi/mid/lo's that a audiophile speaker should display.

That's my off topic rant for today!

It truly does show how we can see such horrific damage now and have the drivers walk away.

The most telling part is at 48 second when you see the whole front end of the 59 pushed into the dummy's face.
We also have to consider that this is 6 year old tech and airbag systems have advanced even more since then. Since this is a partial side impact our side bags would go off as well providing even more protection then the single bag does there.

Well on topic you probably would have had a great sounding dash speaker imbedded in your face in the 59!
Not to mention where the 5 pound under dash 8 track player would have nailed you.

Car audio did suck until the 90's.

Speakerlab 1.0 kit speakers for the dorm room in '74. Still strong today.

Speakerlab 0.1 kit speakers for the back of the LeMans in '75. Still going too.
Great sound with the slide in cassette deck and amp. The car, not so much.

High Fidelity Stereophonic sound for my first 10 years of driving.
When the tape inevitably broke and wrapped around the capstans you threw it away and bought the newer version.

And just in case the hipsters get the players to come back on the market I am ready with about 50 of these bad boys (can't bring myself to throw them out)

I feel like things lasted longer back in the day. I had a radio that I used to listen to Bulls and Cubs games ever since I was 5. My iHome crapped out on me a year into college. My sister just left for school this past fall and uses it for her dorm with no problems.

Nah, they didn't we just remember the stuff that lasts a long time and forget the stuff that crapped out quickly and we threw away.

I'm glad to have survived the 10 years I drove my Z.

Anybody catch the clever closing statement?

"The IIHS has played a key role in driving these advancements. [In] the past fifty years the institute has made a real impact. The roads today are safer for it."

Hey we are back on topic after I once again assisted in jacking my own thread!
Ya, it was subtle but anybody that like them some puns would catch it.

It's a good clip, Tony. We can all use a reminder now and then. Not just to appreciate the tech but also to mind ourselves on the highway.

Safe motoring, everyone.
