Home Made product of the Year! If Cusco had made that, it would be $699.......

I thought of trying to tie it back to something, but honestly, there is nothing. Take a look at your car and you'll see. Everything nearby is something that if used, would defeat the purpose of it's design, which was to avoid touching the painted surface of the car.

Strength wise, there is nothing to worry about though. I'll be running mine to the bike shop this weekend (about an hour) and have m yfirst bike race in a couple weeks. So it's going to start getting lots of use very soon.

Another member on here bought one of the sets as well, so hopefully they'll chime in here when it arrives to comment.

You could probably run a security strap from the trunk down, but then you introduce something that touches the painted surface and that can cause wear.

Probably. What would be the point though? The FR-S / BRZ is M16x1.5.

Can probably be done. If I end up running another batch, I'll ask about it.

Speaking of which, both my remaining sets are now sold. I recieved a number of people asking about this though. If there is still a number of interested buyers, I can look into running off another batch of these.

Thanks again all for the comments! Now...off to the bike shop with the new rig setup!

Thought about it, but honestly I'm not the first person to think of this. Like I said, BMW and Mini both have tow hook bike racks. This is simply adapted to work for this car.

Never know though.

But for now, here's a shot after the first trek with the new setup!

Travelled about 30min on side roads and highway to get to my local bike shop. Did 110km/h (70mph) no problem. I was a little white knuckled at times, considering I can't really see much of the bike or rack while driving but after arriving I realized it's strong and sturdy, just as expected. Didn't move an inch!

Spent the rest of the afternoon driving around with just the rack on the car (bike was at the shop). Not one issue.

Also made a quick stop at the beer store and I'll say that it makes an excellent spot to put things while you organize the trunk!

TG,
GREAT write-up and creative solution. I just got my car yesterday and looked underneath the back end and agree your mounting points appear to be the best ones as the muffler eliminates any easy solutions. I may take a slightly different approach as I have an idea I used on a couple Miatas in the early 90s but the tow hook shaft will still be the attachment point. I'll get some exhaust tubing bent and form a large upside down "U" with ~ 100 degree bends on the lower legs to give it a slightly forward slope. A couple arms near the top of the U that the bike top tube will rest on, plastic/rubber sleeved. I intend to use aluminum for the shafts as I will not cantilever out as much as you have, attaching the mount very near the bumper cover and relying on the structure of the reinforced sheet metal to provide neccesary support, that part's a little sketchy.

great design. I dont like the ones that strap onto the trunk. The frs is pretty soft and those things always look like they put alot of pressure on the contact spots

now sharpen one of those rods and mount it up on the front tow and find some enemies

Pretty cool. However, it says in the manual not to use a bike rack. It was never an issue of not having one available, it was not supposed to have one.

Interested to see how this turns out! Post it up when you start!

I had the trunk mount option on my tC and it dug into the trunk and rear bumper a lot. I'm much happier with this design as it doesn't touch the car.

Owners manual says a lot of things your not supposed to do. It's a guide, not the bible. It's written to protect the manufacturer, not the consumer.

This looks like a great solution, if you were to make up some more, i'd probably take a set (what was the cost?)
You could probably make them a bit shorter IMO..... I'd be certain to hit my knees on the excess bar that is poking out the back!

My bike is far smaller that yours too....i'd probably mount my thule roof rack to it.

I think this is by far the best solution for a bike on our cars. Please either send the specs or sell me a set.
