Thought this thread would get more exposure vs the STI EV thread but.....

The ICE STI is officially dead.

Doesnt seem like there will be an STI variant of this WRX now....

https://www.autoblog.com/2022/03/11/...-ice-canceled/

Unless it subtly hints that the STI based on this new gen WRX is ready and waiting for a reveal and any new STI's afterwards are going EV.

You beat me to it. Sad news. I’m sure maybe a final edition will be released just like the Evo.

All the special editions of the last model make a bit more sense now.

Very weird news, development must be in a advanced phase. Not sure if they realized that would not meet new Cafe regulations or anything like that.

Subaru spokesperson saying they decided not to make an STI for the current gen because it would be too short lived. Even if true (not saying it is or isn't), keep in mind that the typical WRX lifecycle is ~7 years. So please ignore all the clickbaits when they translate this to "ELECTRIC WRX STI EXPECTED IN 2024!!!!"

I would expect a 50hp+ hybrid power train over the previous STI coupled with a beefed up FA24F motor. Why not use hybrids to torque fill down low with a larger turbo for better top end and market electric as performance with efficiency? This appeases the tuners and the regulators.

I personally would have loved a hybrid and I'm a little upset that we're skipping over that. I think that would have been able to last 1 full generation (~7 years). I can see why doing a full generation of an ICE only STI with a bespoke motor and so on wasn't in the cards.

All that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see a WRX tS or something here with a few STI goodies.

This ^

Subaru never ever said they were developing a new Gen STi. They were very clear about the WRX but not a word about an STi. The clickbaits assumed there would be an STi and even gave it stats which were obviously (as per usual) made up. There was no STi "in development" that they all of a sudden dropped.

The new WRX is built on the global platform the same as everything else now the only upgrades an STi would receive would be a special engine and some aero. The WRX is more or less going back to the old days where they were just an upgraded Impresa and not a dedicated platform as the last couple of Gens were.

All in all pretty much going the way of the Evo.

They could just keep using the EJ25 that all the STI's have been using lol.

or pump up the boost on the FA24
