My supra needs a diet. Badly.

Quite literally, the supra drives like a modern S2k. Numb steering that is hyperresponsive, and an excessively tail happy nature.

Yeah media portrays the MKIV as a straight line car only but it’s certainly not. Lots of people build them that way to do ‘Mexico’ type racing but she can really handle well if setup right.

My buddy had a 93.5 with a T67 single. This was in the 90s (way before F&F). Drove it a handful of times. Violently fast on the highway but scary on the turns.

Yeah.. that’s exactly my point. Power delivery has to do a lot with how a car behaves. Those old school turbos were either on or off and nothing in between which upsets the car coming out of a turn and going WOT. A nicely setup car with a linear power delivery coupled with a nice Suspension setup (coilovers, sway bars etc) will yield ya with a very rewarding car when the turn comes up.

Another thing to consider also is if you drove a Targa car vs. Hardtop car. The difference is rather drastic in terms of handling. Single turbo cars remotely adhere to the concept of balance. Hence your sentiment about the platform being dismal when the turn comes up but your sampling was of a car that not setup or modified from its stock form where the factory balance was muddled and not enhanced.

This is not true at all. I’ve been in plenty of MkIV Supras that handled well. It was always more of a ‘GT’ car, but the crazy power you could make and highway pulls overshadowed what a great all around car it is/was.

It's hard not to view the MK4 as anything but a straight line car when 7-second quarter-mile times are plastered all over the internets.

But, that's the folly with the 86. It's a hardtop Miata that the internet wants to be a rear-drive godzirra kirra.

If anything, the MKV Supra just cemented the purpose and charm of the BRZ/86. It’s truly a unique car designed to give drivers an old-school, well-connected, pure driving experience in a world of modern cars.

This makes me want to buy a BRZ/86.. oh wait. lol

Please do this again when you trade in the Supra for the Gen 2 BRZ/86

Thanks for the write-up. Interested in the new supra but it isn't for me at the time for a couple different reasons. Just curious about your post, you mentioned that the steering doesn't feel as connected. Many people say this about various cars when comparing them to the FRS. The FRS has good steering don't be me wrong, but I think that point and shoot feeling and the accuracy of the steering feel is more a result of the 7 inch wide wheels (215 series tires). What tires are on the front of new supra? I would guess they are quite a bit wider than a 215s? I wonder if that is the reason for the steering not feeling quite as "connected"?

Dead steering is to soften the peaky Supra. CE Tada-san didn't want to make a peaky car. He wanted a sports car that everyone can enter into the corner without freaking out (I still did lol). Supra already have short wheelbase plus it spool a lot early (than you expect), make it sharp steering wheel will make you fight w the steering wheel instead of focus driving on the track/road... but reality is, not a lot of Supra gonna be driving in the track, so I get some Supra owner's complaints.

I had a chance to drive both Supra & 86 at the track, back to back to back to back (both on the track & road). They're both different car (Apple to Orange). Supra is a fast car, while 86 is a fun car. Is that mean 86 better? That's all up to your preference.

Those 7 second 1/4 miles are far from stock cars though. be lucky to break a 12 with stock ones.

It is like saying a Pinto is a 9 second car because those numbers have been hit.

I've been in a few Poopra track cars that went really well, correct set up for discipline is always the key.

In the end the best track cars are NOT GT cars like Supra's or Skylines, but smaller lighter cars.

Well, that's what I see at the pointy end at track days and WTA.

Horses for courses and such.

IMO, the old "Supra's only go fast in a straight line" comes from the 1990's and early 2000's and the ability to get a easy 500hp with only basic bolt on parts, like alot of people modifying cars, their main focus is on getting a big number, not all round performance, but when you use your brain and spend some coin on your setup, they handle just as well as any RWD GT car, and sometimes better than AWD like the Nissan Skyline GTR's, that's if the RB26 hasn't spun a bearing or spewed its oil all over the track.

That old 2JZ-GTE with its Getrag were/are still tough nuts.

In saying this...we have the Barra http://www.speedhunters.com/2017/10/...the-barra-era/

Talking

Let's all not forget the old joke:

What do a 500 hp Supra and a 1000 hp Supra have in common?

They're both 12 second cars.
