Lol.

Reminds me of when my college friend put a tractor cap on his Jetta's exhaust pipe...

"The popularity of magnesium wheels peaked in 1950 -1960".

I have no first hand knowledge because this ol farm boy from Ohio had to settle with just painting the OEM steel rims different colors. Not like the wealthy Canadian hot rodders up north who could afford "Mag" wheels -

Ahhh be see now we are back into the whole nomenclature thing. The real magnesium wheels were popular through the 60s but well into the 70s we called any non stock wheel a "mag". They were probably mostly chromed steel but they were still "mags".
Actual mag wheels were dangerous as hell because if they caught fire they were almost impossible to put out and water just made them burn hotter and harder.

Oh wait I see.
So you point that out but ignore the points where they clearly call them "mags"?

I remember calling them mag wheels as well as mags. It was more a point for humfrz and his rims.

In the realm of useless information; in the early 60s a mag wheel plant in south Chicago got on fire. Fire dept. came and sprayed water on it, bad idea. then they thought foam would work, bad idea. Too much water to make the foam. Just sat around and watched it burn, well not looking at it because white hot and blinding bright.

So you might ask how do you put out a magnesium fire?

It turned out that UL had some experience and told the insurance carriers to require the company to hang burlap under the ceiling then plastic sheet covered with several inches of graphite. Flames were hot enough to burn the burlap, melt the plastic, and dump the graphite on the flames smothering the magnesium fire.

How about that for useless information.

Second piece of Useless , In 1968 a set of knockoff mag wheel for a racing MGBGT cost as much as the car. Always has been: How fast do you want to spend?

Aircraft wheels... and the most dangerous thing about brake fires.
