what I don t get it is, if something caused the values to drift from factory values... how could that be OKed by the Ecu in first place? and then not be OKed if they drift back to factory?

I would like to see those stored value in my ecu with techstream but I do not understand where to see them

Do I have to read the vvt initial value with techstream with IGN ON with engine off, or need to turn on the engine?

God I hope they are ok, i don t know where to find a used ecu and i'm afraid of my ecutek license

I also don t understand how to be sure a new ecu will have the stored values that will be ok for it to work.. it amazes me there isn t a wait to fully reset them

f*ck it.

I removed battery, i reflashed, performed a cold start.. vvt didnt enable
i did the procedure that was posted in the previous page (10 sec idle, 20 sec 97km/h ecc ecc)
vvt didn t enable

i drove out of the highway, while in neutral I screamed super loud and jumped on the throttle on rage..... it activated.

God I hate subaru
but now it works

Here is the thread where I started really exploring the issue. Also here is a screenshot of the IPLV window and where it can be accessed. Techstream needs only to be connected to the vehicle. The engine does not need to be running.

See also the very last step at the bottom of this page in the service manuals.

So this morning started the vvt

then i turned off and now again it doesnt work ))

I managed to check with techstream

it gives me correct values around 90 in exhaust and 0.0/0.0 in intake, and that was after i shut down the engine when vvt was working

i started again, vvt never activated, same initial values

then i flashed again and checked immediatly and now it gives me 0.0 in every 4 values

So i dont think they are irremediably stuck in those values as you say? a reflash should reset them

I think toyota says to replace Ecu if the values are wrong because Techstream never allowed to reflash an ecu, only to upgrade, if an upgrade is available

Anyway i'll try again tomorrow morning, somehow the cold oil makes my vvt activate
I'll also check all the connectors of the cam sensors and OCV, maybe something is loose

Do you think it s possible to perform the vvt active test even if vvt is disabled?

I forgot to mention this. Both intake cam gears were fixed before AVCS is working again.

Even with those small covers detached no DTC came in. It is most curious part indeed.

One gear was replaced with new one, another was only hammered on the both sides of the cover.

Those covers are only there to hold the parts in place until the assembly is mounted to the camshaft. People have incorrectly made a big deal about them popping off.

I would do the same thing, just peen the plate back in place.

My Vvt angle from logs keep staying at 0 when oil is warm and vvt doesnt activate
. Checking with techstream, it gives me correct values for exhaust but intake sides gives me 0.0
Do you think i have a problem to the cam gears?

I had bent the cam intake shaft #1 and changed both the chains, but mechanic said the cam gear looked good so didn t change it
first 40km after rebuild, the vvt intake #1 showed a noticeable swing around the target value of like +5/-5 around target... since it fixed itself, we supposed it was just like an air bubble around the cam gear
but now i start to think it s a broken cam gear

Since ecu is very easy to change, well much easier than pulling engine out and checking cam phasors. Id probably source another ecu and try that.

I dont thing the vvt initial learn parameters burn in, i think it that the input or output chanels on the ecu that control the cams go bad, hence the ecu sees incorrect cam initial positions and hence doesnt activate vvt.

Hopefully you have a tactrix to flash a test tune to replacement ecu, so you dont need ecutek licience

But when i first checked the VVT initial value it gave me 0.0 on intake side
but then the morning after (yesterday) it activated anyway after a reflash?
Can it go bad and then suddenly works and then bad again?

Today no luck, the vvt angle goes to 0 when oil is warm but doesn t activate.. they seem to move a little bit if i blip the throttle, like 1-2 degrees of movement but stay off

i have a tactrix, but i Don t know where to source an ecm here in Europe, they seem all so expensive

I have the same symptoms in the Active Test when AVCS is disabled, but the intake cam learning values
are looking good at least.

Below is the log when AVCS is activated. Not by just only that engine braking, but several tried.

i replicated your engine braking in 5th and then blipped hard and activated

i did video and a log I will soon post

cam intake#1 oscillates a looooot and it s not smooth to drive when activates

so i ll rule out an ecu problem

Can be oil that became shitty and need to be changed?
Now i have to drive home and unfortunately i do not have techstream with me to check the vvt initial value before cranking again, i think it will not activate vvt again now as usual
