I think a battery bank will help you out more, less of a risk of your battery dying out when your charging a phone. Unless you need something specific for that port.

Why not? It wouldn't work any differently than having one plugged in eternally. Except it would be nicely hidden. The port could charge too a full cell or two even with the car off.

If you kill a car battery by charging a phone you have some serious issues with the system.
