Sort of. Will dirty it up but not go nuts. Will be doing it as it was when relativly new.
If I did it as it was when captured everybody would say I over weathered it since it looked like complete and total trash!

Not me! I appreciate a good, realistic weathering job!
Anyone can dry brush or do a wash, but the real skill and attention to detail is knowing where to do it and not.

I do as well but it was so bad it wouldn't look real on the model.
Apparently it was even worse on the inside!

" When the I-400 entered Yokosuka I was detailed, along with a few marines, to accompany the squadron doctor for a medical inspection of the boat. This was quite an experience - as you so eloquently described in your report. The sub was incredibly filthy, with a layer of grease and left-over food on the decks and rats running freely in every compartment. The stench was almost unbearable, particularly near the heads where one of our party lost his breakfast as he was hovering over the sanitary tank opening.
Despite the unhygienic conditions we witnessed, the physical appearance of the crew was remarkably good. Everyone seemed to be lean and alert. I think that in the closing weeks of the war, the Japanese submarine crews realized the collapse of the Empire was imminent and morale dropped sharply. Incidentally, when we questioned the ship's officers as to the total complement, the reply was 187. By our count it was 213, I believe.

The next morning, the crew was ordered on deck and the fumigation commenced. If my memory is correct it was conducted under Joe McDowell's supervision and resulted in about a dozen gunny sacks full of dead rats."

Good news! My 6th grade math teacher was wrong and I am capable of learning things. Today I learned how to take detail picture of models that actually show detail.

Gloss tint coat on whole sub. Makes the limber holes in the side black but not a huge contrast like paint would. Gives the rest a nice blotchy look.
Next is a flat coat to subdue it all.

Tamiya acrylic upper with Model Master acrylic lower. Deck is Testers little bottle enamel.
The black gloss weathering coat is Future Floor Coating mixed with dollar store black acrylic "artist" watercolour. There is also some Citadel "Agrax Earthshade" figure was used on the deck and lower hull to darken and give blotchy areas to the browns and reds.

I do use some limited Vallejo paints but pretty much just for rust and grime. They will actually be the last step after I dull coat the whole thing.

Aircraft complete with flat coat and almost microscopic paint chipping and staining.
The grey paint on the pontoons and struts of the folded version looks bad in the picture but when you consider that the the whole thing could sit on a dime then you can envision that in real life it just looks like a soft edge instead of jagged blobs.

Decals. With the right stuff you can make even the worst decals look painted on.

Done!
About 20 hours on the bench since Friday.
Basic out of the box build so no rails. I may add them later but since the intent of this kit was just to be a side model to my planned diorama I may just not worry about it.
Picture overload time!
Keep in mind that aircraft on the catapult is the size of a quarter so you can figure the size of some of the parts.
