I just don't get this part...someone tell me it serves an actual aerodynamic purpose so I can get over it....it looks so stuck on amateur rocket bunny

I think they work pretty well stylistically, and normally I hate added-on side fender vents... Anyway, real front and side vents vs. the fake vents at the front of my '17...

https://media.subaru.com/newsrelease.do?id=1657
"The functional side vent reduces drag by ducting air from under the hood and fenders. The released air is directed to a side sill spoiler that creates downforce at speed."

What is the purpose of fender vents?

The main purpose of fender vents is to relieve built-up air pressure from inside the wheel arches which causes aerodynamic lift. Typically, there are air intakes in the front of the bumper directing air over the brakes to cool them. This air gets trapped in the wheel arches and creates high pressure. High pressure results in lift over the front wheels reducing traction. Relieving this built up high-pressure system in the wheel arches reduces front axle lift thus increasing safety and grip.
In addition to high pressure, trapped air in the wheel arches also creates aerodynamic drag. Drag is the force of air pushing in the opposite direction of the vehicle, reducing efficiency. Some research suggests wheel arches account for up to 30% of aerodynamic drag of a vehicle. With fuel efficiency ratings becoming increasingly more strict on modern vehicles, you can understand why so much attention is being directed towards the reduction of this inefficiency. Efficiently routing air into and out of the wheel arches increases fuel economy through the reduction of drag.
Another benefit of fender vents is to efficiently vent hot air generated by heavy breaking out in the air stream. Quickly relieving hot air generated from the brakes makes room for more cool air to pass over the brakes, thus increasing efficiency. Finally, it is worth mentioning that trapped air in the wheel arches also contributes to cabin noise. Reduction of cabin noise is more pleasant to drivers on long trips reduces driver fatigue.

Yeah, it's probably no coincidence that there are side vents now that there are real front vents that feed air into the wheelwell.

So probably the *real* benefit for those of us who track these cars is more brake cooling without any additional lift or drag.

Thanks @ZDan, @StE92ve for pulling me off the ledge. Given they are functional (at least according to Subaru) that eases them a bit. Still, they look like an afterthought and the part of the new design I like the least, only slightly below the Civic backend.

I think the new BRZ rear end looks great.

Corolla hatch looks great as well, for a fwd 5-door hatch econocar.

I think the BRZ's rear end looks "better", but I would be 100% down for a 3-door BRZ/GR86 with Corollaesque hatch Somebody p-shop that for me...

in like a hundred more pages or so people are gonna be seeing more of it and will finally think that it's a pretty good looking car.

people just dont like change.

everyone hated the kouki bumper for gen 1. people might still hate it, but a lot of people like it now.

fickle.
