If nobody is actually saying what you're arguing against, then yes, you're making it up, and it's a straw man.

You mentioned politicians earlier. The straw man is a favorite tactic of politicians. During the Obamacare debate, Rep. Alan Grayson stood up in front of Congress and said Republicans wanted us to die. Then, instead of arguing the merits of Obamacare, he argued against people who wanted us to die. Obamacare was a difficult argument to win. But it's not hard at all to argue against people wanting you to die.

Stop acting like a politician.
