From The Truth About Cars: Hachiroku Madness: Only 1000 (FT)86, All Hand Made?

Exerpt:

To put the fans at ease, I called Keisuke Kirimoto, official spokesman of Toyota Motor Corporation. I asked him whether I had nodded off during the interview when those 1,000 handmade Hachiroku were announced. Kirimoto answered:

“What????”

I told him that there are people who are under the impression that only 1,000 will be made per year. Kirimoto’s answer:

“Gee, I hope we will be selling more than that.”

I would say this forum is where they and others get most of their information from.

Maybe again some misunderstanding. Toyota did not make this car for profit purpose. This does not mean they would make this car if they would lose profit. The reason why we waited so long for this car is because they wanted to give as this car but without losing, as they did with the LF-A.

News Flash from that article @ http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...e/#more-420599

Not a word about 1,000 units / year limit. Not a word about handmade. Production is outsourced to Subaru which in turn outsourced its complete kei-car production to Toyota’s Daihatsu. It would have been a raw deal for Subaru if only 1,000 Hachiroku are made by hand, while some 80,000 Subaru minivehicles are made by Daihatsu.
So the car is really Daihatsu made!?

Quote:
Kirimoto asked me and the Hachiroku fanbase to keep in mind that what we saw on Sunday and what will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show is a “pre-production prototype”, and that the final car will be shown at its official market launch some time next year, along with pricing and possibly production targets.
So these aren't the final cars in the flesh?! WTH

If you read it again, Subaru which in turn outsourced its complete kei-car production to Toyota’s Daihatsu

Subaru's kei-car is now being produced by Daihatsu. Subaru's Gunma plant (correct me if I'm wrong) is making the FRS/BRZ/GT86/86 etc.

Nothing's final till we buy it :P

First, the way that top quote works is as such:

1) Subaru frees up it's kei-car plant by moving all production to a Daihatsu (Toyota Sub.) factory.
2) Subaru uses the empty plant to build all 3 three variants of the AS1 (FR-S, 86, and BRZ). Note that this plant has the ability to build 80k cars a year.
3) Both Subaru and Toyota nee Daihatsu are selling (theoretically) every thing they build with no loss of productivity.

Second, the last bit is PR spin; these are the final version but some smaller aspects may change before the final price and launch for each region is revealed - little things like color of the turn signal housing or whether the car comes with 16" wheels stock, etc. Nothing major like if the engine is going to be turbo-charged or if a whole new rear end will be designed.

Tranny is definitely based on IS-F like some of us here (including me) have said before. Just watch presentation video made by Mr. Tada, he clearly stated that tranny of this car is based on IS-F.

Yup. No way they would use the LFA tranny in a $20k car. The question is how similar is the IS-F tranny to this one.

I wouldn't say that. Just that they were as shocked as the rest of us by those numbers. So it's obvious now that Leeky's information came from an idiot source. That's not Leeky's fault.

I'm guessing they are saying that due to differences between Markets. Subaru says NAIAS will be the US Spec Official debut and that TMS is the world debut.

Wow, this thread now has over 30,000 hits!

Thanks for the pictures btw, very interesting- although I reckon the PR guy was feeding you BS, no way this car can make toyota any money by selling 1000 a year.

He's PR and doing what he's paid to, drumming up interest in the product and getting people talking.

Facts and PR do not go together.

Thanks again for the pics

While I appreciate Leeky being there and sharing his experience, I also feel bad that Toyota PR took advantage of him and fed him rather fantastic "truths". I'm sure the communication he was given weren't outright lies, but lacked significant context, being massively misleading. This is how PR and marketing effectively work, unfortunately. The article from the significantly more seasoned [and jaded] TTAC staff shows that a healthy dose of experience with PR slime helps temper the misleading path the PR people lead you down. I'm sure Toyota PR carefully crafted the plan to have a media virgin from the forum play excited messenger to the fan base. It did work, but IMO it also backfired by assuming everyone here is naive.
