Hey guys I recently test drove the 86 straight after test driving the Megane RS.

Hey guys I recently test drove the 86 straight after test driving the Renault Megane RS.

Straight away as soon as I got in I loved the seating position better as I felt like i was in a sports car low to the ground. How all sports cars should feel.
The Megane RS didn't give me the low seating feeling.

The other thing I noticed I had trouble engaging into 2nd gear. It was very hard to select which kind of turned me off as Ive had previous bad experience in the past with 2nd gear when the car is cold it won't engage after a while the gears start to grind and the syncros start to give way.

I thought the 86 was a lot more fun to drive over the megane as it felt lighter and more easy to throw into the corners. Although the lack of power I think I would get bored of quite quickly. I put my foot down it started to pull and then nothing just a straight power curve to nothing? I was waiting for some kinda surge of power to kick in.
It is just missing that sort of punch (vtec, turbo, something.) Where the Megane has the power but just feels like your driving a high positioned hatchback you don't get that race car feeling if that makes sense.

Has anyone else had issues with 2nd gear? is it a problem that getters better after time?

I just can't seem to find a car under 45k that I love. If i was to buy the 86 it would definitely be getting a turbo kit added.

Let me know your thoughts guys.

Some have had more issues with second then others but I think we all have it at some level. Changing the tranny oil seems to help for some but usually after you drive for a few minutes it gets better anyway.

The "lack of power" can be dealt with (as you said) with any one of several FI systems available. Even a simple exhaust and intake upgrade can help quite a bit actually. Drive it with the revs up like it was designed and you will find it is not as bad as you first thought. The car is not a dragster though and that is not really what it was built for in the first place. Don't worry even the stock set up holds the fun factor for a long time.
I had to look up the Megane as I had never heard of it before and the first thing in my head after the pics popped up was "Hyundi Veloster"! They look so much the same I think they could swap body panels!
Have no idea what cars cost or what is available there but maybe a Genesis Coupe may be more to your liking if you don't mind giving up handling for power.

Well, if your budget is 45k, you could do a lot to an 86, or an S200. You'd be well below 45k with a nice suspension, brakes, wheels / tires, and the Jackson Racing Supercharger.

*EDIT* In the US. I'm a damn Yankee.

$45k AUD is not the same as $45k USD.

Ya it looks like the sell for between (Aus) $35K and $40K and the parts are going to be a lot more as well I would guess. Be pretty tuff to do much and keep it und $45K.

Oh. Yes. I don't know why the Sydney in your profile and the Megane in the OP didn't tip me off. Nevermind.

In the US, 45k could get you an EVO pretty much.

I am actually in Canada and did a quick search for the Australian prices. Had a brain fart for a second myself and couldn't figure out why a search for "Scion FRS price Australia" didn't have ANY results!

I'm from Australia guys, I don't know what car to buy, I want something with power that handles like a go kart has to be light weight. I might have to save up some more coin and go for something like a Lotus Elise.

I think you nailed it! Like I said above looks JUST like the Veloster. Don't get nerdier (is that a word?) then them.

The new Megane 275 gets a 7min 54sec around nurburgring same time as a porsche GT3

Do you not get Renault in the states?
