Most of the wealthy that have collections have collections because it's a place to put their money, just like oil paintings, real estate, etc.

At some point, you have to put your money somewhere, and having it all sitting around in cash isn't going to work (well, unless you are the Joker).

Jay Leno has a car collection because he loves cars, but also because it is an investment for him. A large majority of the vehicles are really just storage devices for his money, he buys what will appreciate or is expected to appreciate, plus a few that are just toys.

It's a whole different world.

Yeah many of the guys I fly own airplanes that we charter out while they aren't flying. I don't think they really make any money but it's a damn good write off and they fly for free. Even though I get to drive it (although some are actually pilots too who I have to babysit), I always say welcome aboard your aircraft or Mr. SoAndSo's and point to them if they are in company of family or business partners and it makes them smile. As long as you got $5-$10 mil (I fly little turboprops and light jets not the big ones) laying around to front the aircraft to us it's a great deal. It's MyRandomAircraft LLC usually.. operated by our charter company. And then when they get bored of it or want to buy a newer one we buy the old one off them and the get to write off the depreciation too. Those get converted in shuttles for our scheduled service to the islands (No bathroom, catering area [they just get a cooler strapped in the back], or tray tables, and all the seats face forward like an airline but there is more space in the back for the crazy amounts of bags they bring and it's only 1hr flights). Our charter company is also an LLC... I'm pretty sure I am a write off too and any knowledge of my existance will be denied. (lol j/k but kinda not)

To me, the philosophical difference between a supercar and artwork is that artwork is meant to sit in a museum or in a display case or on the wall, while a car is supposed to be driven.

A lot of supercars are very beautiful pieces of art, but they have an identity crisis...it feels wrong to let them sit in the garage, but it also feels wrong to me to drive something so ludicrously fast on public roads, while dedicated track cars are much better for lapping tracks. I've driven a Tesla Model S and I just thought it was pretty frustrating that I couldn't bury my foot in the pedal for more than a second before blowing through the speed limit. You can wind out your McLaren or Ferrari in 1st gear and that's the end of the fun.

When it comes to collectible cars, I feel like it's a bit like putting a nice painting in a public display where random people can damage it with flash photography or touching. Say you have your really nice 964 or NSX or 348 sitting in the garage...they're great street cars, but do you really want to take it out and risk damage? I suppose if you had access to lots of OEM replacement parts maybe it could be justified.

Personally speaking, I'd rather have a nice GT for feeling coddled, something like a Lotus for having fun, and a dedicated track car for excitement and speed.

I went to this place called Speedvegas where you can rent supercars and ACTUALLY drive them. In fact they put an instructor in the car with you who encourages you more than holds you back. Super fun. I look like an idiot in a Ferrari, but it was well worth it. I drove all the cars in these pictures except the Lambos behind the NSX. (A buddy of mine has rented Lambos before so I already drove them but maybe next time). My best time was actually in the Porsche but it was also the last one I drove so might have been just learning the track and listening to the instructor. It did have all-wheel steering though..

Oh yea, I plan on doing Speedvegas someday too. That said, I feel like getting into a Radical PR6 or Stohr WF1 would feel like more of an occasion, even if the engine noises aren't quite as good as a V-a-million supercar.

I definitely plan on owning a single seat D sports racer someday when I can afford to just have something like that taking up space. I'm just really hoping the new Lotus model coming out next year is going to be naturally aspirated so I can have that as my street car.
