The one(s) that got away ......

Hi Folks,

As I look back over the years of admiring automobiles, I thought of a few missed opportunities ....

When I was 16 and visiting my uncle in LA (l was living in Ohio), he said that I could have that old 1950 MG-TD, if I could get it running. Yep, I got it running, nope, my father wouldn't let me drive it back to Ohio.

When I was 17, while working at another uncles Chevrolet dealership in Ohio, I spied a 1954 corvette, sitting almost abandoned on his used car lot. Nope, although he would sell it to me for $200, I (my father) couldn't afford the insurance.

During a tour in Germany, in 1966, I bought a new VW bug for $1,300. (USD). At the same dealership was a new Porsche 911, for $3,700 (USD). I figured I could buy it, make interest payments and drive it for two years in Germany, transport it (for free - military) back to the states (duty free - again military) and sell it for what I paid for it (including interest). Wife # 1 nixed the deal.

Anyone else have any cars that "got away" ..... ??

Neighbor had a '66 Mustang, I6, all original, 1 owner, been in the garage for the last 20 years, basically a barn find, only major issue were the tires and the RF fender was fucked. She wanted $3500 (early 2000's, overpriced, probably worth $3000 at the time), 'sold' it to a painter guy for chump change plus a coat of paint on her house when I was 14, she got screwed on the paint job. Never even got the chance to save up for it.

Friend has a '68 911, wanted $14k about five or six years ago, hasn't touched it, now the thing is worth probably $30k. Stupid college, should have just bought that instead...

Circa 1981, when I was 16... A local guy was selling a MINT 36k mi '70 R/T 440 Charger in Hemi Orange w/ a black vinyl top. It was breathed on a bit w/ bolt-ons & I was CRAZY for that car--$3600. I started looking @ it when I was 15 & went back to see it several times & the owner was always gracious to me.

My parents wouldn't co-sign a loan for me & I was heartbroken. It was way too much car for a new driver, they felt.

That car would have been worth a princely sum today... I STILL think abt that car & have old pictures of it I couldn't throw away. lol

First car could of been a supercharged Impala SS, but instead I got a new camry because my parents did not like the idea of buying a used car.

I was 16 at the time and had just got my licence, my dad gave me a budget and both 2005 Rav4 and the MR2 Spyder was in the same price range. I had my eyes set on the MR2 spyder but it only came in MT, I was clueless on how to operate one at the time and parents pressured me to get something more practical. I would probably still have it now if I bought the MR2.

My dad's cousin had an Olds 442 that I was in love with. I was trying to convince him to let me buy it from him, but they were convinced I wouldn't be able to keep it running. I ended up with the WRX when I graduated high school (which is when I wanted the olds)

this color combination iirc, but a convertable.
