Living up to your handle, I posted this in the MR2-Celica thread yesterday because I think this will likely lead into the next Celica model. They just used an 86 shell for the test mule and concept.

There's a series of about 4 videos on YT with Larry Chen documenting various stages of the build. It's a neat build, but although I am not a fabricator, the front subframe they built didn't look that robust. Otherwise it looks like a clean, and cool, build to me.

As far as I understand it the car wasn't built by Toyota at all. They basically had the idea and maybe renders for it and then contracted it out to a shop/outside production team to build it.

Doesn't mean Toyota isn't planning a new car but I don't think they're using this for anything other than gauging fan/market reaction.

Also, someone I know told me this car is likely being crushed after it's done at SEMA unfortunately.

It does not matter who built it. What does matter is why and I think you’ve hit it on the head. That is the reason I posted it the MR2-Celica thread as I stated earlier.
The barbaric policy of crushing preproduction, non-street legal or concept vehicles has lost us untold numbers of fascinating, unique and technically advanced specimens. There may be justification in some cases. However, I think overall it’s all about the money. Whether it is perceived liabilities, government over reach or as I learned firsthand, the manufacturer didn’t want the expense of transporting the vehicles back home.
