In the office for my last day today. General vibe is cold as ice towards me from upper management.

It’s a sign that I probably wasn’t wrong about this place being toxic.

I think I'm going to do some cone racing this season. The SCCA here has about 20 autox a season at the Boise fairgrounds. When I would cone race in San Jose, all the events were like a 2 hour drive away. That was one of the reasons why I quit years ago. Boise fairgrounds is only 20 minutes away. I won't be competitive with the twin with all the mods. If I remember correctly, just the fact that I have a rear seat delete will put me in modified, but I don't care. Last thing I need is more bowling trophys. I just want to go have some fun, and meet more car guys.
There is a new class this year, XS or some such. Probably still won't be competitive (twins ate right on the line for weight) but may still be better than P or SM. Then again... P is under represented...

I still vote for having fun, who cares about trophies.

Not sure how people think their bosses should act when they are there the last day after QUITING! Should they all of a sudden be their best buddy? Should they suck up and kiss their ass because they will miss them so much? Should they walk around in cold silence because it is as awkward for them as the person leaving?

Maybe just act like it's any other day? The only awkwardness I felt was getting side-eyed by people in the C-Suites who would normally have a conversation with me if they saw me in the office, since it's such a rarity for me to be there.

It isn't just any other day though. It is your last. They probably just don't know what to say. It is always awkward in the last day or so at an employer. Has happened about 80% of the time when I left a place. Even with people that were good work friends.

Random thought: what with all the supply chain disruptions due to the effects of the coronavirus on China in particular, does this validate the concept of diversification?

I mean, yes there's economies of scale to be had, and labour costs in China are cheaper than most (though not the cheapest), but putting all your eggs in one basket (particularly one as opaque and authoritarian as this one) seems like it was always a risk.

I'm sure profits might be a bit lower if you also had a supply chain based out of another low-cost country, but wouldn't the risk-mitigation for an event like this be worthwhile?

Better out of a toxic environment. Are you moving on to a new job?

I just sat through a two hour corporate teleconference on this. If it was JUST China impacted then your point would be valid but we have plants in pretty much every industrial country in the world and the impact is slowly spreading across all of them. The Asian plants are of course the highest impacted at this point but the European plants (especially Italy) are starting to feel the impact as well. The risk mitigation of spreading production around would be far outweighed by the increased costs. As we are seeing not all that effective in a global scale situation anyway.
So far may plants are not effected by direct parts shortages but indirect materials such as gloves, safety glasses, drill inserts and a dozen other things made in China are starting to get hard to come by. These are products that are essential to operate but really only made in areas that are susceptible to this sort of incident.

No, because the executives walk away rich regardless of how bad or good things are. Profits are just a matter of bragging rights.

My experience is they don't care much until you start winning, then they are all over your car.

Once a guy protested me because I had rims an inch too wide. I proved they came with the car, but they said they were not a factory option and the dealer probably put the wider rims on it. So I spend a bundle finding the factory narrower rims. Next race the guy that protested me shows up with wider rims. I shook my head and said whatever dude. I still beat him.

Was hoping to hear your thoughts on this.
Great points that I hadn't thought of (re: supporting tools/materials).
