Do FRS Aftermarket Key Fobs work?

I recently purchased aftermarket key fobs for my 2013 FRS from two different online sellers for about $20-$30 each. My original key FCC is HYQ12BBY-G and so both replacement keys I bought having matching FCC numbers. I took both keys to a couple different licensed locksmiths and they were able to cut and program the keys so that they could wirelessly open my car's door/trunk. However neither locksmith was able to program either key to start the engine. They both Independently concluded that the key I bought, while having the same FCC number, had a different series security chip or something and that I essentially had bought the wrong key. One of the locksmiths claims he can get me the right key and program it for $185. The companies that sold me the aftermarket keys are perplexed and don't see why the keys shouldn't work.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so do you know what cheapo aftermarket keys DO work for the FRS? I am not interested in paying $400+ at the dealer.

The keys they sell will work but the programming is what cost the most. Last time I had lost a key I had a locksmith told me you'll need the dealer to reprogram it but went to another locksmith and he reprogrammed it for 150

Thanks. One of the locksmiths is willing to program the key for $65 if I provide him the key. As I mentioned though I can't figure out what after market key is the right one!

Did you take him the one you have to see if it's right?

Do FRS Aftermarket Key Fobs work?

I have a Tactrix cable and Techstream and have successfully paired remotes. I have not been successful at pairing the transponders though. I have a G key and the blanks I ordered were also G’s but Techstream fails to recognize them. I’m ready to suck it up and order a blank from Toyota for $60 and pair it myself. I was able to get the blades cut locally for $4.

Edit: actually I paired the remotes with an $18 cable from amazon before getting my tactrix cable. I’d buy a cheap cable before paying someone $65. My gut tells me none of these aftermarket transponders will work though.

I just called Scion/Toyota here in Pasadena, CA and they quoted me $251 for a blank key. Programming it costs an additional $145. How are you able to get a blank key from Toyota for only 60 bucks?!

Paying $250 for something that costs them less than $5 to manufacture is really freaking annoying.

Toyota wants to program the key then the computer to work that key. Some locksmiths can duplicate the code from a working key to another making the car think it is the same key. I have done this with Lexus.

They were probably quoting you more than just the blade and transponder. This link is to the blank. The transponder is crammed into the plastic backing. I actually pried the chip out of one of the after market keys I got. Perhaps the part in my link doesn’t include the chip.
