Agree completely. I think it's just simple denial. When confronted with something painful and unpleasant, most people just can't or don't want to deal with it, so they put it out of their minds. Some actively deny the facts (the pandemic deniers), and some just can't deal with it so they pretend it doesn't exist (the way my sister handles most problems and crises in her life).

I've been told (by a psychologist) and read that this is some kind of warped, maladaptive survival response. If a person can't deal with a crisis and are overwhelmed by it, they ignore it (theoretically until some later time when they're better able to handle it). Maybe it makes them feel better in the very short term because they don't have to confront the problem.

But the big problem with that is, the problem doesn't go away just because someone can't deal with it. The SARS-CoV-2 virus doesn't hover in the air and say, 'Oh, this is overwhelming for you? You can't deal with me? OK, you get a pass until you're able to accept it." If someone ignores the virus, it doesn't wait for them to become better able to deal with it. It just infects them and others, and the reality gets so much worse.

When confronted with a horrific, life-wrenching awful situation, it seems that for many people the 5 stages of response are -

1. Denial
2. Denial
3. Denial
4. Vehement denial
5. HOLY F@CK THIS SH!T REALLY IS REAL!!!! HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED!!

This approach tends to work poorly when dealing with a widespread and potentially lethal viral pandemic.

For the curious, the only side effect I have had thus far is a little more shoulder weakness/soreness than the flu shot. I don't know if this is because my immune system is more active than with the annual flu shot or if the dose is larger with this vaccine, so there is more of an effect regarding my immune system and muscular damage, but it is subtle.

We received, and starting delivering, the first shipment of vaccines here. Based on the post I had earlier (where I'll be last man out in my family) I've informed my Wife and Sons they will have to form a "herd shield" around me once they all have their shots.

I wonder if this is, to borrow phrasing from the forums, "arm/shoulder dyno" effect.

The only reason I question it is because this year when I got the flu shot, my shoulder was sore for a couple of days, when in previous years it only lasts a few hours usually.

This year I didn't feel very sore from the flu shot. The prior year I think I felt more sore and even got a little malaise. I haven't had any malaise, but the shoulder soreness is enough that when I raise my arm, like when I am grabbing something high in the cupboards, I feel my arm just doesn't want to fully extend. I don't have a better way of describing it.

It could simply be where the needle was inserted. The take away is that my anecdotally experience was mostly uneventful.

No shots here, but I live in Texas - we hit 1990 and started trying to turn the clock back, so we're a little behind the curve.

Maybe that's why my voices haven't really changed - they still don't like my brother-in-law.

We hit the 90s and went into psychological reverse. One downside is we're now back to the late 70s disco era. I was in my 20s then. I REALLY hated the BeeGees.

Haha. Born in 82, and I like the BeeGees. One of the most successful bands ever. And disco wasn’t bad. So many songs have been sampled and turned into hip-hop.

If we are reversing then eventually we will be back to FDR’s time. We will pass the Green New Deal and raise the top marginal tax rate to 90%. Then when we hit the roaring 20’s we will have open tolerance of gay parades and women will give VD to sailors. Eventually marijuana will be legal, and I’ll be able to buy a suit for $2. This is great!
