Is it so loud you cannot have a normal conversation in the car with someone else?

IMO yes..

I'm trying to think how loud it is without my straight pipe exhaust... I can tell you... if you're worried about the noise as a daily driver, I wouldn't get it... If you're pushing this much power to need these gears, it shouldn't be your daily driver.

@pleong and others, please advise, thanks

I have a spare 2014 transmission begging for an upgrade before I destroy the 2015 transmission with low miles that was just installed.
If I ship my transmission to Jack's, what bits should I order to make a complete upgrade? i.e., PAR gears + double synchro 4th gear + performance build service including all coatings + anything else?

I'm ok with gear noise. Car is primarily used on track though I'd have enough time to enjoy a new type of whine driving to/from track, to add to OSGiken lsd and suspension noises.

The par gearset should come precoated and treated. Ask Jack's about their shift forks if your interested in that. They are also developing a trans cooler if you track your car.

Thanks a lot - talked to Jack and we may end up doing some business together. I will probably send him my 2014 transmission first for inspection, then we can figure out what is available for testing by May 2017, beginning of my next track season.

Is there any way to just do 1st though 4th and leave 5th and 6th stock? I need the strength but I do like road tripping my car so the noise on the highway is a deal breaker.

If that's the case, just drive in 5th gear. 6th makes noise, but 5th gear is completely silent as a straight cut because it's the direct drive gear. I believe Velox is still working on that and testing a 1-4 set, and I believe Jacks Transmission's is also looking into prototyping a 1-4 gear set or something along those lines. Very exciting that we have multiple companies looking into this now, very good for everyone in the Ft-86 community indeed because it can only get better.

Yeah driving 6+hrs in 5th gear doesn't really sound like a great idea not to mention kinda negates having a 6speed

true, but if you have enough power requiring this type of gear set or something along those lines and you have to drive 6+ hours a lot, don't you think you should be driving a different vehicle or if you are taking the car to a track maybe trailering the thing? I'm not telling you how to do something I'm just throwing that out there, I understand what you are saying. For all of those saying that can't handle the gear whine, I don't get it. I daily my car still and the gear whine is fine to me, I can still listen to my music with the windows down and have conversations with my wife in the car without yelling. Learn to use throttle manipulation to keep the whine to a minimum and bada bing bada boom. I am able to tune out the gear whine and it just doesn't bother me.

Answers from the Manufacturer

Hi All, I have recently been directed to this topic and have read over the history.
As known, we have been supplying a gear set option.
Keep in mind 6th gear is an option and is usually replaced since its too weak or the ratio does not suit.
6th can remain OEM and hence 5th and 6th will then be quiet. This will appeal to the users that are worried about noise.
Straight cut technically known as Spur has many advantages when compared to Helical gears. Although the 1 disadvantage is the gear whine. Keep in mind the way we manufacture gears these days with our new technology our spur gears are quiet when compared. We actually have customers request they be nosier.
The few advantages of Spur cut gears include, no thrust axial loads, better tooth profiles, strength, etc. All these advantages reduce horse power loses.
Can we purchase 1st-4th only?? was a question I noticed popped up often.
The answer is Yes, 5th and 6th will retain OEM gears. The only issue with this is that if the car is a heavily launched 5th can break since all the power runs through 5th before it is transferred through the selected gear. Only when 5th is selected it is direct drive. If 5th shatters there is a chance that the tooth debris can blend through other gears. So if you don't launch the car and have not got really high power then 1st-4th may work at your risk. As the manufacturer we need to be very clear.
I will keep an eye on this forum and will happily answer any questions but can I please ask to not ask the same question twice since I don't have much time away from production.
