i dont have a miata. i have a brz and an elise. out of my 4 miatas, 3 ended up with hard tops, none of the the miatas got any better with a hard top outside of a mild aero benefit there was no difference. its the same for the elise.

I gave two writeups on my experience, and I also provided two links supporting that fact. Just understand that I owned a targa and a hardtop, so even though we are all entitled to our opinions, to use the analogy again, it is like a flat earther talking to Neil Armstrong. Search supraforums for pages on the subject. You would also have to take all their words and experiences over your own thoughts. https://www.supraforums.com/forum/ar.../t-120133.html

A 10” shorter wheelbase for those cars might make a difference or the fact that the Miata was designed with a softtop as standard; even with the softtop up, there is little structural benefit compared to adding a targa or putting up a hardtop convertible, yet still, any full convertible will be designed with more structure knowing the top down is primary.

Can't wait to see if it gets as much love the twins got when they were released by the aftermarket. Needs more aero!

Search for the topic on almost any car (NSX, Supra, Corvette) and you will see similar findings. The top itself may not be torsionally rigid but it doesn’t compress or stretch that easily which is where it is helpful in the overall rigidity of the chassis. Even if it was made of plastic. Then again, we're a good ways from it hitting dealerships so that could change.

A simple lightweight shear panel closing out an open-top structure is *extremely* effective at increasing torsional rigidity. C4 Corvette used this, so did Supra MkIV and others. Of course it's better still to have a *fixed roof*! Preferably without sunroof! But you can believe those older removable targa cars are significantly stiffer with the tops fixed in place. More modern Corvettes designed in a ton more stiffness into the base chassis, but still the removable roof panel does add some stiffness, just not as much relatively.
