For most people? "because the fast guys do it". Why do the fast guys do it? So they can rotate tires.

The proven formula is high end coilovers, unbalanced front/rear aero, and square tires.

I've seen s2ks w/o aero be successful using a squared setup on track and especially on autoX courses. U just need the right mix of suspension tuning (spring rates, shock tuning, and front sway bar) to counter the increase in front end traction. Like Mike said tho, most track guys do achieve that balance thru rear aero.

no reason to stagger a non mid/rear engine'd car with stockish power levels.

What do you mean by "unbalanced front/rear aero".

Unbalanced aero would be more aero grip at one end than the other. I would imagine in an S2K on square tire sizes you'd shift the aero balance rearward so you have good rotation at low speeds without it trying to kill you at high speeds.

That's usually the proper way to do aero for any car (though rarely is aero done properly).

A disproportionate amount of rear aero is added to the point where the car heavily understeers at speed. The rear aero is adjusted to each track, so that the terminal understeer doesn't hinder the car.

Exactly what happens to me last April. Had a nice bump in the barrier due to high speed rear looseness.

You could blame the accident on the looseness. Or you can blame the over correction.
