Oil sump?

So I am a car noob but I have friends with experience. I was discussing mods and one item I was asked about was an oil sump. Having not seen any threads go by on this I thought I would pose the question to those of you who know these things.

Does our ride need/have an oil sump? Is this something anyone has messed with?

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could chime in to help, but I think your discussion may have suggested dry sump applications.

An oil sump is just an oil pan. Your friends might have been referring to a dry sump. This basically replaces the oil pan with something much shallower and uses an external pump to manage the oil. You can read up on it here: http://www.drysump.com/drysump.htm

It's really only used on racecars. You'd see no benefit to this on a street car and the entire system will set you back several thousand dollars.

High end street cars use dry sump. It makes more power, and does a better job of lubricating. Only drawback is the price.

The real advantage of a dry sump is the oil is pumped and thus reaches places that might not get oil under high cornering speeds etc. only really relevant for track cars, not daily drives.

As others have stated, generally if your car didn't come with a dry-sump from the factory (several cars do, one that comes to mind is the Z06) then you would likely only need it if you were racing your car or tracking it on a regular basis. I would argue that it is pretty important for a track car, but it is not inexpensive but does provide results.

A dry sump with it's assocaited oil pump prevents parts of the motor from starving for oil under high g cornering manuvers. Like others have already said I doubt most street cars need this expensive option unless tracked heavily.
