it was a 90's GM design. could never get past the fantasik plastik interiors of the era, or having to tolerate owning a gm product for the same reasons.
but i appreciated the exterior styling. just as bmw did with the x6. and mercedes' gle and tesla model x....

I wish the second gen 86 exterior was a little more different with a angular front bumper and angry DRLs reminiscent of the FR-S |

I try to be honest with myself. I bought Subarus that are reliable and fun at a cheap price. They satisfy my mod bug. But I know they have faults and there are better cars out there, though most are more expensive. |

I'll admit that upon initial reveal, I liked the BRZ more, but since then them *much* more simple frontend of the 86 won me over. The BRZ now looks too busy, with shapes and shapes and shapes everywhere.

I’ll admit as soon as I saw the first official photo of the GR 86 I immediately liked how it looked. But to be fair, I was already warmed up to it because of the renderings which to me almost nailed it (about 80-85% accurate).
I honestly had to force myself to like the ‘13-‘16 FR-S, especially with the basic chrome headlight housing and the abstruse contour that the trapezoidal turn signal/fog light housing rests along. On the other hand I felt like the ‘17-‘20 86 had a really busy front end. The headlight was blacked more but still had a busy look with all the lines, and the wide grille seemed wavy. Just like the bumpers of the 1st Gen BRZ’s, I prefer the smoother roundness on the bumper and grille of the 2022 GR86. The toned down look fits the car better. It’s low-key but with a subtle hint of aggressiveness (typical trapezoidal grille, sharp headlights, and integrated color-keyed rocker panels). The car’s driving characteristics and purpose flow in to the look of the car which I think was greatly executed.

Case in point, I obsessively followed the development of the GR Supra, to the point where I had my finances in order to buy one and obsessively talked about it with everyone I knew. When it was unveiled without camo, something about it was off... Seemed like the fit was grafted onto a chassis that was never designed for it or something. I tried rationalizing. I thought maybe it would look better in person. And while it looks striking for a split second in some angles, in others it just doesn't work. I sat in one. Test drove one. etc. Never grew on me. So, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't.

If there's two things that have grown on me, it's the 2017 86 looks and the 2013-16 tail lights.
That said, 1st gen FR-S is still *clearly* the best looking. And no I'm not biased haha. As to the poll, the 2nd gen GR86/BRZ still look meh to me inside and out, but doesn't really matter because under the sheet metal, the cars should be worth the upgrade regardless. If I was in the market, I'd pick 2nd gen over 1st.

Limited viewing angles and lack of any depth perception means that absolutely the way the car looks will be misaligned at the start. Not only that, but most people will struggle to see it any other way than through the lens of the OG 86/BRZ. Better or worse is entirely a personal choice, but having a car look different as you start seeing the images and videos and then with your own eyes is not 'Rationalised the things you didnt like'. Jesus. |

Personally, the GR86 rear taillights don't like me at all (reminds me a Buick) and new front feel like try to copy some lines from Porsche or something like that. Personally feel that 1st F-RS/86 gen looks more "Toyota". I like how this 1st gen design emulates in some design aspects the 2000GT, even on the dashboard...I feel this new design has been lost this "touch"...Time will tell, but so far, I like much better my 86.
BUT said all that, I appreciate that Toyota & Subaru decided to continue made an affordable sports car, that still keeping the RWD and also the MANUAL transmission. My hope is that this GR86 be a sales success (on sports car numbers, of course), in order to justify more generations of this type of cars, instead of the ugly CUV's/SUV's horrible models. |

On a technical level, the car is fantastic and is certainly the most “perfect” 86 we’ve ever gotten from factory.
Aesthetically, I can only compliment the front end of the GR86. The rear end of both cars and the front of the BRZ don’t do it for me. I’ll stick with my FR-S RS 2.0, which is the sexiest twin across all generations and color options.

Very good - I do like your quip.
I'm explaining it to you - its not a rationalisation process of things you don't like. Sometimes you might feel a car is _worse_ when you get to see it in the flesh. Plenty of people felt that way with the supra for instance. |
