Mine came from Western Auto. It was "payment" for an entire summer spent baling hay and cropping tobacco on my Grandparent's farm.

I remember when I was a kid I got a used bike and decided I wanted to paint it black with like super high gloss clear coat on it. Sanding seemed like it took hours or maybe even days. It looked awesome when it was done but the time spent in the basement sanding away with the mask on was torture. I like taking things apart and putting them back together but body work was just never my forte..

@Sapphireho our favorite driving roads are on fire now . Bear Creek area, Pescadero Creek, La Honda.
Bummer. Fires in the summer up there mean more mud slides in the winter. I need to call some friends in Boulder Creek and get the scoop.

Smoky up here in Treasure Valley today from fires up here too. Lots of lightning storms.

My dad would get used bikes, repaint them, and give them to me and my brother. When I was 12 he was going to by me a new bike and we went to Sears. I saw this all chrome BMX bike that I wanted so bad but it was 200 bucks, he was willing to spend 40. Since I wanted something more then what he was willing to spend he loaned me the lawnmower and made me earn all the money and buy it. He took a 10% cut of what I made with his mower and I had to buy the gas. By the time I went back with the money to buy it, the bike had dropped in price and I had a bunch of extra money.

I grew up living in abject poverty. We were pretty much the very definition of "poor white trash".
When I was 8 I really wanted a bike and my dad who was a garbage collector at that time brought me home the remains of something he pulled out of the trash while working. I made it function but took a lot of shit at school so I wanted the latest and greatest.
Made a fuss the next year and dad said if I wanted something new I had to pay for it myself. Said I could use an acre of our property to grow and sell some corn. So I grabbed the tractor and plowed up the field, he got some seed corn someplace (probably stole it) and I planted, tended and harvested it all on my own. I then took it in my old red wagon to the new subdivision a few miles away and sold it door to door for 50 cents a dozen. When I was done he took his 50% (fuel and seed right?) and the rest was mine. Went out and bought the best bike Woolworths had to offer. Still had enough left over to buy a BB gun as well!
Did you put the gun to good use?

What colour was the new bike?

Why didn't you just mow your neighbours lawns? Probably kept more of your hard earnings, enough to buy a bike and machine gun..

I don't remember. At the time I was fishing a lot, so it was probably something along those lines.

First big thing I spent my money on was a simple red kayak at 10-ish. I think it was like $400.

Many a model tank, plane and ship succumbed.

Goldish orange.

You think my neighbours (all 4 of them) had any more money than we did? You think grass got cut in that neighbourhood?

Was exactly like this. Was too lazy to find the right colour in the first pic.
