Need help choosing an intake

I’m trying to get a cold air intake but is there any that does not require a tune ? And for those that do require a tune, can you tune it yourself with an open flash tablet ? I honestly just want to have intake noises tbh…. Right now I’m between the injen intake or the grimspeed

For the noise, chopping the snorkel is enough.

None of them require a tune but some of them will confuse the tune you have

grimmspeed messes less with maf if you don t want to tune.. but in reality they all will mess with it and require a tune to have spot on afr

The stock intake is a cold air intake.

If ALL you want is sound you could update the Sound Generator.
TRD sell a 3-Pak but they seem pricy for what you get. I have seen used ones posted for sale on occasion.

I've played with intakes on various NA Subaru boxer engines over the years. I do get the sound you're chasing - basically an exposed cone filter. Which in short ram or "hot" intake variations are bad for power and can even lead to detonation in extreme heat instances. Cold air intakes I've seen suck up water and hydrolock engines in a few cases, plus the filter sometimes is too far away for the sound you want.

In either case, the cone filters generally need full intakes to work, which ALL should be tuned for because ALL vary the MAF scaling. Now, whether or not the ECU can adjust for any variances is how manufactures get away with saying "no tune needed" sometimes. The problem is all deviate away from the MAF scaling tables, some more than others.

As others have said, stock intake with a drop-in filter is the way to go. Retains the "cold air" aspect of the OEM intake, is cheap, and basically makes the most power. It's just not a restriction. If you want a fancy pipe, the Perrin intake tube is another cheap addition that doesn't require a tune as it's not changing the pre-MAF sensor flow or the housing the MAF sits in.

IMO, any sound changes you want should be done via the exhaust. Much safer this way.

If you want sound and not worried about dollar to performanec etc, the grimspeed one works well and if you leave the top cover off its loud.

The Mishimoto silicone induction hose isn’t a bad mod, you get slight gains. I’ve got one on my car, the main reason I got it was to clean up the engine bay and get rid of the sound tube.

I shortened the stock intake trumpet behind the front bumper. Gets a touch more 'growly'. My next try is going to be removing the resonator boxes.
