Exclamation Help - Broken Shifter or Bad Synchros?

After a very cold day in CO my shifter moves left and right freely in any gear as if it was neutral.

I'm being told I likely have bad synchros but I'm thinking (Hoping) it's just the shifter itself (bad bushing maybe?).

please send me your wisdom

Just confirming. It was working fine, then a cold day happened, and now you have this problem. No missed shifts, no money shifts, noone else drove the car?

Do you know if there has been any work done on the drivetrain since the car left the factory?

Is the car driveable? Does the car still go into gear? Is it the right gear?

Any sounds coming from the transmission when you shift with the car off? With the car on if it runs?

My first thought is something went wrong with a shifter bushing somewhere, but more information will help track it down.

Ps assuming this is a manual lol

I had a floor shifter like that one time, but it was on my 1937 chev pickup.

I have no idea, however, I'll refer you to our shifter specialist, @Ultramaroon.

If you have busted something - there is a good chance he has busted the same thing and has some insight.

yes there was no prior indicators, no one else has driven

unsure

i drove it a few miles like this, still went into gear, and it stayed in the right gear

Any sounds coming from the transmission when you shift with the car off? With the car on if it runs?

no sounds

Based on your info, my guess is the rear shifter mount bushing is broken. If it was a problem in the transmission, you probably wouldn't be able to get it into the right gear and you'd hear some pretty bad noises when driving.

The rear shifter mount is under the car just behind where the shifter passes into the tunnel. The cold might have caused the rubber bushing to get brittle and crack/snap which would allow more sideways motion of the shifter than usual, but would still fulfill it's basic function.
