I've noticed the same thing with mine. It's pretty annoying. With the AC on, it's almost impossible to hear when making a call. May have to do something about that in the future.

On another note, I can't get over how good this color is in person in direct light.

I find the best colour is just as the sun starts to go down. Still get some emerald but the angled light give a deep green glow.

so the issue is how the speakers are wired and not software related... wonder if it's possible to do a custom rewire of the side speakers so that it will connect to the amp instead?

starting at post #18. but it's mostly speculation, as those that know don't have a hakone to take apart.

Issue is not whether the speakers are wired into the amp. They can be. As delivered, the amp is bypassed by an adapter plug in the trunk, which takes headunit out-signal and loops it into the speaker wires right at the amp. Take out the loopback plug, plug in the speakers, and reinstall the fuse and they are wired in. The bigger issue is whether the headunit can be wired into the amp successfully.

The amp requires +12V power which comes in thru a separate connector. This connector is connected but the fuse has been removed. It also requires a "turn on signal" from the head unit which comes in through the same connector as the head unit in/speaker out, but is disconnected. We are "pretty certain" that this signal is not activated by the head-unit, but no one has actually tried. The headunit (in all 2020's, not just Hakone) sends a "high-level" signal which we are not sure will work with the sub-woofer amp. It may cause the amp to not function or over-drive the speakers. In the earlier Pioneer units, the head unit sent a specific bass signal to the amp separate from the dash and rear speakers.

So the test would be to find out if the amp "turn-on" signal could be activated and the head-unit out connected to the amp in a way that could drive the speakers in a useful manner.

Hakone Edition, 6 month anniversary

I finally got around to a real Spring cleaning. I have now had my 2020 Hakone Edition 86 for a full 6 months, believing it to be the first one in New England. While I drove it a bit on nice days in November, I drove my 2015 FR-S all winter starting Dec. 1 and didn't really switch over to this car until my FR-S got shipped to California on March 23. So now that I have had this wonderful vehicle for a full 6 months, including 4 weeks of Fall, 3 1/2 months of Winter and 6 weeks of "Social Distancing", I have been able to rack up a total of 807 miles. Maybe by its 12 month anniversary, it will have 1500 miles!

PS. Options were the mud flaps and a rear bumper protector and the only mods are K&N drop in air filter, swapped out the Michelin Primacy tires for Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, and put my comfortable white "Cue Ball" shift knob on it. I also have a nice set of 205/50-16 Blizzak WS-80 tires and reconditioned wheels for next winter. Thoughts on future mods are the TRD air intake (the red inlet tube nicely matches the red intake manifold) and a replacement for the kind of crappy head unit in the 2020s.

The system in my FRS was an audiophiles dream compared to this seemingly cobbled together piece of total shit! It is my single complaint with the car. As I have said before the single cone paper speaker powered by a tube set AM radio in my 58 Chev sounded better than this thing. I am hoping that somebody comes up with a way to resolve this so I don't have to fork out cash to replace it.

I've been hunting around for specifications for this head unit (pt296-18190-20).

They (Toyota) must of posted the head unit manual lately.

https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/docu...f/OM2086da.pdf

Check out page 21, ASL (Automatic Sound Levelizer), to see if it help you.

I still am searching for the specifications of unit, watts, channels, type of touch screen, etc.. If anyone knows please post.

Nah The ASL just increases volume as you speed up. The issue is there all the time.
I have not been able to find anything on this HU yet.

Im pretty sure its a 2020 MY issue and not a hakone specific one, since the new head units are on all the 2020 MY cars.

This

It just happens that so far the majority of the people posting about 2020 cars are Hakone owners.

I have not been able to find anything on this HU yet.

Did the Android Auto thing again. Of course this is my subjective ear!

Placed and received calls (via my cell phone & AA of course ).
  • voice quality was great (clear and crisp)
    • sound was coming from the appropriate speakers
      • #2 son who's voice has not gone bass yet
    • had call while in motion (ASL off)
    • definitely using the ceiling microphone
  • Google Maps audio navigation worked well (I usually have it off)
    • appropriate level of voice over music that was playing

Hmmm maybe it is an Apple thing then because that is the total opposite of my results.

How are you connected? AA only works via the cable connection (it also connects to the HU via bluetooth, but does not provide any AA functions via this connection). I thought I heard Carplay works with the HU via bluetooth or cable, maybe the bluetooth connection is causing it? Try a cable (it's a pain I know).

Carplay only works through cable. The volume issues I am having are with Maps via cable and phone through Bluetooth.
