Trunk Cancel Button Pressed, But Lock Seized
Earlier this week, my trunk stopped opening from the cabin button and the remote. I've had this happen before, so I know I can just unlock the trunk from the lock above the license plate.
However, when I went to try that, it seems the lock has seized. I tried WD-40ing it to get it to release, but no dice. I tried rotating the key so hard that I apparently warped it so much, that I couldn't turn the ignition. (Simple solution to that, I just warped it back.) Given that I don't want to destroy a key, what suggestions that I can try to get it to release? I could try reaching in to get to the straps behind the back seat to see if can pull on them to fold the seat down. Suggestions on how to do this? Sent from my HD1905 using Tapatalk

Shove your hands through the back seats and pull the rear seat release strap(s). Then get a 3D printed button cover and never worry about it again!

Using a piece of wire, such as a coat hanger has also worked for me in the past. Good luck!

did you try pushing down on top of the trunk while trying to turn the key? sometimes it relieves enough pressure in the lock assembly to allow it to work.

You're either going to have to get to the straps with some sort of hook, or take out the seat seat cushion, and move the rear side trim our of the way enough to remove the bolts holding the seatback hinge to go through from under.
But on an unrelated note, I was looking at your profile trying to see what year it was for the trunk cylinder to seize from corrosion, and while the year isn't listed, I see you're in toronto with a Kia Rondo... ... Get rid of that hot potato SOON. if you're in canada your cars are subject to rust and those kias have STRUCTURAL FUEL TANKS which are weak to rust, the start to leak from the bottom and cost several thousand dollars to replace. |

You may be able to pull up the two "buttons" on the top of the back seat. Those are the latches. As I recall they basically work like door locks.

This may help it's from a post by Stang70Fastback on another thread.
"Grab the black plastic trim surrounding the lock mechanism on the top corner of the rear seatback. Pull it up. It snaps right off. The pull up on the red-colored peg to release the seat. Then just snap the cover back on. It's that simple." |
