What keeps the new wrx cool?
Since the new wrx shares at least some basic motor characteristics with the fa20 in our cars, it dawned upon me to ask what is keeping those cars cool? I havnt seen a discussion like this so I thought I would try and dive into it, is it the lower compression of the motor? Is the radiator larger? My warranty almost up and I think turbo is the best option but I know there are some cooling issues.
Opinions? |

There is a water oil cooler coil where the oil filter mounts for one thing. The rad is most likely larger as well.

Better engine compartment air management, oil cooler, bigger rad, lower compression. When the engine is boosted from the factory the engineers will concentrate on cooling more

Stock 86+bolt on turbo kit for street use: Add oil cooler, you are good to go. Stock 86 +bolt on turbo kit + heavy track use: Oil cooler, radiator, vented hood, ensure turbo components are wrapped/coated, safae distance between fans and turbo manifold, will do. Stock WRX for street use: factory small oil cooler, seems to be fine for street. Stock WRX + heavy track use: Has this even been tested? I haven't read anything on it. My point is, you will not get into "cooling" issues unless you are doing heavy track duty which over 90% of street car owners out there are not doing.

Its also a low mount turbo. Just like PTuning and AVO's kits.

I have oil cooler, bigger rad ( not needed for street) and vented hood ( nice to have, but not required). As long as your stock fans are working or you get a fan shroud for aftermarket fans, 100+ degree traffic are no big deal. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk

Top mount inter-cooler - not running same air through intercooler/radiator/aircond/ vented hood - for top mount intercooler lower static compression motor cooling/venting designed for turbo -likely larger radiator factory oil cooler |
