I would rather enjoy the pleasure of destroying my own engine , than paying somebody else to destroy it.
Just from experience with my son's legendary 4wd attempt in my zooki.

My car is also sitting at the dealership with a dead engine, got the call last night. I was also offered a use motor from LKQ or a new short block. Not sure where I want to go with this yet. Strongly considering pursuing an aggressive trade in deal on my car. They broke it, so now maybe they'll buy it.

ill take my chances

"A Subaru spokesman told CR that there is a low risk of the engine problem occurring and that the automaker is recalling “the entire population of vehicles that could possibly be affected out of an abundance of caution.” The company estimates that about 0.1 percent of the recalled models will experience the problem. The automaker says it is not aware of any crashes related to this issue." -https://www.consumerreports.org/car-recalls-defects/subaru-and-toyota-recall-engine-issues-stalling/

0.1 percent is small enough not to bring my car in and risk them messing up my perfectly fine engine. I'll pass after hearing all these problems people are unfortunately having.

Made up my mind and ignored the recall... My car will most likely die from other excessive "fun" factors than the valve-springs breaking apart.

UPDATE:

Just got off the phone with Beth, from Toyota Corporate.

She told me that she talked to the dealership, got their input about the recall work, and asked me if I would like to "participate in getting my car fixed", which means that I "pay the majority of the cost".

I told her that I don't feel like I do, since I was stranded on HWY17 and could have been killed due to the results of this recall service.

She said that there is nothing else that Toyota is going to do and that they were handing my case over to Toyota of Santa Cruz, where I could work out a price to fix my car.

I'm so frustrated right now.

From my experience, it all depends on the customer service of your local dealer. The OEMs have to believe whatever the dealership tells them.
Maybe try a different dealership in the area?

Isn't a recall work supposed to be warrantied for 1 year/20kKm?

The recall work is warrantied. They're saying the engine blew up completely on it's own, with no relation to the warranty work.

Which is BS, but that seems to be it.
