Sorry, I need to add some qualifiers to that statement.
I would buy that new, in LHD, in a heartbeat.

I've owned 2 FR-S and one 86 (the current one) as you can see I like the "new car feeling" but to this day I'm more on keeping my 86 than replacing it.

Last week I've seen live a 2nd Gen BRZ and It's a great looking car for sure. But I don't know... it lost some of it's "purity".

The big downside to the 2nd gen look wise, is the interior. The door panel are so... empty, the weird hump onto the passenger side and the whole packing is weird. 1st gen with the upgrade of the 2017+ imo is the perfect interior. Simple, elegant, sporty. Even if the interior of the twins are not considered to be good looking I love it every time I'll step inside.

I'm not a fan of a full screen cluster too. It's damn too bright at night and it don't have the feel of a RPM needle jumping around when shifting gear

What I'm really happy about is it share lot of parts with the 1st gen twins, so we could have parts supply for a while !

Didn't have a chance to drive it, I hope to have the chance to drive one soon.

I'm gonna keep my 86 for sure, but massive respect to Toyota and Subaru to goes on with a 2nd gen of this cars. It's been already 10 years and they still doin' it.

The car has 77,000 kms (46000 mile) on it and has never seen snow. The last 4 digits of the VIN indicate it was probably around the 1800th unit assembled.

If I sold it I'd expect to get a very small fraction of the cost back. And I should note that I tried to be very frugal, buying all the bigger mods lightly used.

So, I can get maybe less than 1/3 my cost back and to do the same thing again this time around would probably cost me in the range of $70k all said with similar performance in the end. I don't need more than the 300 or so hp I have now.

The only real sacrifice to me would be not driving the latest style, but since I consider these cars to be future classics that doesn't bother me much.
aside from your supercharger, it's likely your brakes, ohlins, wheels + rubber, and exhaust (although you likely may not want to use the header would be transferrable over to the second gen. After finding out that some mods from first gens are compatible, I am now very very tempted to convert a bunch of stuff back to stock once car is paid off the year after and getting a second gen. The looks are starting to grow on me (still hate the tail lights though!)

The gen 2 model is much less of a blank canvas than my 2013 FR-S was. That's not a bad thing, they have taken notes and added in things people want rather than leaving everything for the aftermarket.
I briefly considered trading my '18 STI with under 44K km for a GR86 or BRZ, but going from the most capable all wheel drive system to a twin with snows just doesn't appeal in the long term. It would have to be an automatic sport tech, so my son who is 14 will be able to drive when he gets his license eventually. I won't make him learn manual if he isn't into it.

I think there's validity to what you're saying about the 1st gen having more character. It's probably hard for anyone who hasn't owned a 1st gen to understand. I think it comes down to the 1st gen being more basic/analog/simple/lighter.

I put in an order for a 2nd gen BRZ to have a fresher chassis/engine/interior while matching the speed of my 1st gen on E85, but I will definitely miss certain aspects of my 1st gen.

For me, the new car is no less a "blank canvas" than my '17. Maybe more of one due to lack of big brakes For sure minimally I'd be looking at springs, dampers, way more front camber, and wheels/tires minimum, with swaybars and exhaust/intake/tuning mods further possibilities, same mods I've done with my car. And of course many will be looking at E85 and FI with the new one, same as with last-gen. It doesn't seem to me that the new car is any less analog either. Weight has gone up by about 50-60 lb. same vs. same, +1.5%, which isn't great, but not as bad as it could have been, not by a long shot. And it's only ~15-20 lb. heavier than my PP.

My initial thoughts at the beginning of 2nd gen-
- it is ugly, specially rear
- 1st gen was built with passion and the chief engineer Tada-san was such an passionate about this project, 2nd gen is not. 2nd gen more like commercial than passionate.
- 1st Gen is OG. And OG is always beloved no matter what comes next

Now-a-days, looks like my initial thoughts are not that correct that I used to feel.
