While it may not be malfunctioning, judging by the different responses there may be some way to adjust it to lower the force needed for closing the door.

2014 and mine often doesn't catch when closing. It often requires a bit of force to close the trunk.

Funny thing is, if I close it by pushing it down from the driver's side it works the first time almost every time. From the center or passenger's side, more force is required.

Pushing the interior trunk release and it only pops the trunk. I don't mind that, though.

When mine was new i had to slam the trunk down to make it close.
After two years use it now closes easily.
I think the trunk sealing rubber just compresses down a little with age and then the trunk will close easily.
This is common on any new car.

If it's being forced closed so much the rubber collapses, then yes. The rubbery parts will last much longer if they aren't mashed down. The latch also sees less force/drag when it is opened.

The trunk lid on my wife's 03 Camry is the same as it was when new.

Granted, there's probably a wide zone of "good enough" but if you have to slam it then, yeah, it's probably too tight.

My 2013 would close just by letting go of it. My 2015 I have to slam it to get it to close. Neither of them do anything more than pop up a little when opening them with the button.

My roomie drives a twin and she noticed the same thing as well.
We decided to take it to our respective dealers and see what they say.

The Scion dealership said that you just have to be 'firm' about closing the trunk. (whatever that means)

The Subaru dealership said that they've received multiple comment regarding the trunk not closing fully so they're "looking into it".

In the meantime we'll all just have to slam our trunks down. :/

I took a quick video. First attempt I just let the door drop down on its own weight. Then 2/3rd are with a normal push equivalent to what is needed for closing the side doors. For the final one I used more force and had to push all the way down.

If you want to close it down without pushing all the way through, you almost have to slam it so there is enough force to counter the resistance of the rubber or the spring loaded lever.

You may say the answer is to not close it like a pansy, but the force needed is so out of line vs closing the side doors or other car trunks that it just takes a while getting used to.

I just let mine go on it's own weight like your first try and it latches every single time.

Are you guys comparing a properly hinged gas struts equipped trunk lid to a cheap sedan trunk that just swings wide open?

Mine closes with no issues. But I know the issue you speak of, I detailed a BRZ last weekend and the trunk was like this.
