Also you have to remember with SC's depending on what type, they may not be what your looking for. Turbo's are difficult to keep cool when pushed in this car. Twin Screw SC's give you nice down low TQ numbers, but kits like the Jackson kit acted more like a larger displacement V6 with peak power and TQ being made at the higher end of the RPM range making it suited for track duty. Turbo would be your best bet, but you need the supporting mods to things work correctly.

Power needed to keep up with a Sti/ evo
If you need to "...keep up with an STI", GET AN STI! --- THEN power up.

So, us, probably 275 RWHP to match that. Except here's the kicker: we'll be getting power much earlier (STI's and WRX's don't make those power curves till the turbo kicks in at 8+ psi, which is 3500 rpm at the earliest), and making it longer (stock turbo WRXs and STIs have turbos which do NOT build power all the way to redline in stock configuration). So, they may have AWD capability and bigger peak, but we'll have better power to weight and area under the curve. Just don't blow your tranny (b/c unlike STIs, our transmissions aren't darn-near bulletproof).

I'm at 250whp and can keep up with STIs just fine. Probably somewhere in the 230-250 range needed. You'll get smoked off the line though.

Well I don't really get to do that often. I've actually never dragged against anyone. My only experience is just in canyon runs and we just keep in line. But I have no problem keeping up with an STI the whole time. I just know that 250 seems to do the trick.

It's not just pure power to weight, as those power numbers are peak, and tell you nothing about how the power is made. STI's and WRXs generally make their peak hp around 5500 and peak torque around 5000. A SC'd or NA 86 just keeps building power and torque through the entire band... well, except for the innovate SC. For canyon carving, provided equivalent peak power to weight between the 86 and STI and provided appropriate tires for the 86 commensurate with its power level, it should have the clear edge over the STI provided equal drivers. Basically, I believe you and it doesn't surprise me either (and pleases me immensely) that boosted and under 300whp our cars still can match or out match stage 2 (TBE + protune) STIs.

So, what's the prize of making your 86 to keep up with STi in a straightline on the road?
Faster grocery shopping I guess? |
