I bought the first model year, the first shipment to my area. The tradeoff was condensation in the taillights which took two tries to correct.
Would I have waited an extra year or two to avoid that, of course not! They will add something almost every year to justify new vs preowned. But if it's a great car who cares about the bullshit stuff.

This. The ability to do quick pad swaps with any "brembo" style brakes is huge for me.

Don't forget the non-west market got a pkg called Sti and Sti Sport in place of the tS. If naming is the basis of your point.

For any car that I want and serious about buying, I always wait for the refresh and decide. Or the next gen and then decide. So for this, if I do decide to get another BRZ/86, I'll wait for the refresh (another 4-5 years) and just enjoy my '17 for the meantime.

Unless the sales surprise everyone (most of all Subaru and Toyota) and vastly exceed expectations, other than the usual irrelevant minor trim changes just to give the marketing department something to talk about (NEW!!!), I'd bet when sales of the car taper off after a few years, it'll be quietly discontinued. I sincerely hope not, but I think that's what's in the cards. Enjoy it now while you can. The days of gas-powered, internal-combustion, manual transmission, inexpensive sports cars are sadly numbered. |

It's been a long time since I came on this forum but I saw the new BRZ and it got me thinking about a few things. When the BRZ first came out back in 2012, I was 27 and deployed in Afghanistan. I wanted to buy one with my deployment money; however, I got orders to Alaska so I bought a 2012 WRX instead.
Fast forward a few years, 2020 I just came back from S. Korea and I needed a car while my car was being shipped to the states from Korea. I bought a RSX Type S. Holy moly, is this car a 180 of my WRX. It has better steering feel (a lot heavier, a good thing), shifter feels much more mechanical, wants to dive into the corners easier. Test drove a BRZ throughout the years, I was never really impressed but the FR platform and affordability kept me from straying to far. With this new update, I feel that I am ready to purchase the new BRZ. I am a big fan on how it looks and the updated engine looks good. The interior is far superior to the first generation. Now that I am 36, I am not looking to modifying it. Hopefully, there is a TS or a PP on the first years. |

By that same token, I doubt there will be any surprises in GEN2 sales. It will be exactly as GEN1. It will start off high, then decline over subsequent years. Pretty much like every model, except maybe the high volume ones. Sure, every once in a blue moon the demand for a new car outstrips availability, but it's even rarer that the manufacturer spins up more capacity in the short term to meet that. Maybe, they run a third shift, or a weekend shift to produce a few cars more quickly but that's about it. I suspect if there is a GEN3 in 8 years, it will be a different type of car, as you say. most likely an EV, slightly less likely a hybrid. Either way, I think there is likely to be a facelift mid-model (year 4) unless the plan is to drop he car entirely by then

It's easy for a company to justify things based on financial metrics. If a product is a big money-maker, it's a no-brainer to do it. But if the reasons are other than financial - as the BRZ/86 must be - then those justifications can change on a whim or with a change in management. |

Me, i'll get a new first year if the 2022 is up my alley, I'll be looking specifically for the 2018-2020 model year if I find the first gen perfectly fine for my needs. |

I saw the local Subaru dealer had a new WRB BRZ with PP in the service showroom area. I wonder if that will move in the spring, or will it sit? Someone who is sensible will probably buy it for invoice plus a tiny bit.
