DIY: How to JDM tip on 2017-2020 Toyota 86

Hi guys,

This DIY is for you if:

- You have a 2017-2020 Toyota 86
- You still use your factory muffler
- You want the look of the JDM tips

Section 1: Explanation

Other 86 owners like me, bought the JDM tips (Subaru part number 44370CA000) but even with those, the tips are still pretty much inside the bumper. Why?

Well, looks like Subaru/Toyota made a separate muffler unit for the North American market with shorter output tubes on the 2017-2020 Toyota 86. It could be the same on the 2017-2020 Subaru BRZ but I didn’t have one to check.

With some testing, I’ve come up with a simple solution to have the same look as the JDM 2017-2020 86 for cheap.

Before getting dirty, let’s make comparaison.

Muffler tips parts numbers:

Toyota USDM 15-20 Tips: SU00305273 / Toyota JDM Tips 13-20: SU00301126
Subaru USDM 15-20 Tips: 44370CA010 / Subaru JDM Tips 13-20: 44370CA000

Here’s my car, with the factory USDM muffler. On the left side the JDM tip is installed, UDSM on the right.

Special thanks to @Thefalls for the pictures, here’s how the tips look on a JDM 2017+ Toyota 86.

So, JDM tips on a USDM muffler make an improvement for sure but they don’t sit as flush to the bumper as the JDM Toyota 86.

One of my friends sold me it’s 2013 Scion FR-S axle back for measurement and testing. What I came up with is, the output tube on the 2013-2016 FR-S/BRZ OEM muffler has about 2” more tube length on the output. I’ve test fitted the muffler and voila, the tips sit flush.

The solution is; Use a 2013-2016 OEM cat-back exhaust system with your OEM 2017-2020 tips.

You don't need to buy the JDM tips.

If you can find a clean full OEM catback from a 2013-2016 FR-S/BRZ, it will be a straight bolt on installation. Use your OEM 2017-2020 UDSM tips and you will have the same exact look, with the tips flush with the bumper.

Over here in Quebec, it's hard to find a 13-16 catback in good condition. Exposed to salt and humidity, they rust super quickly. That was the main reason they “changed” the exhaust in 2017+ twins, the metal was really cheap on the 13-16 FR-S/BRZ.

For the next section of this how to, I’ll show you how to properly adapt a 2013-2016 Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ OEM muffler for the 2017-2020 Toyota 86 midpipe.

Section 2: 2013-2016 OEM axle back on 2017-2020 midpipe

For the rust issues I’ve mentioned above, Toyota/Subaru decided to redo the exhaust system on 2017+ twins. The exhaust is similar overall but the big reason the 2013-2016 muffler doesn't fit properly onto the 2017-2020 it's because the flange between the midpipe and the rear muffler is different.

I’ve chosen this way because I’ve wanted to keep the 2017+ midpipe made with better materials (basically stainless steel).

Before starting, here’s what you will need:

- OEM 2013-2016 Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ axle back muffler
- Subaru bolt 2X # 010510307
- Subaru nuts 2X # 902350001
- Vibrant 2.5” gasket 2X # 1457
- Car jack and axle stands
- 10MM & 14MM socket and ratchet
- 14MM wrench
- Burr bits
- Electric drill
- Metal file
- Groove joint pliers
- Metal drill bits
- Wire brush
- Safety glasses
- Silicone spray
- Super glue

- First thing first, remove your factory muffler. You will need to remove the 2X 14MM bolts and nuts + the 4 exhaust hanger. I prefer to remove the midpipe hanger too to have a bit more room. I spray the hangers with silicone spray and remove them with a pair of groove joint pliers.

- After that, you will need to temporarily install your 2013-2016 muffler to mark the flange for redrilling the bolts hole.

- Remove the muffler and drill your flange from your marking, use a metal file to clean the holes. Don’t forget to use safety glasses. It should look something like that:

- Next step is to make room inside the 2013-2016 muffler flange. The 2017+ midpipe has a small section that protrude out of the flange.

- You need to bury the inside of the flange to have at least 58-59mm since it won’t go all the way inside the muffler. It’s a long and messy process, use safety glasses again! After you finish, use the wire brush to clean the flange. It should look like that:

- Almost over! You now need to take one of the Vibrant #1457 gasket and cut it in a way it will fill the groove inside the 2017+ midpipe. You can use your factory gasket to guide your cutting. I’ve used a metal cutter and it worked great. The other Vibrant gasket is used as-is.

- This step is optional, I’ve put couple dot’s of super glue onto the uncut Vibrant gasket and the trimmed one to ease the installation and alignment process.

- Installation time! Install the gasket, with the trimmed one facing the midpipe. Use the Subaru bolts #010510307 and nuts #902350001. Don’t use the factory 2017-2020 bolts since they have a centering device that will don’t give you enough play to put them in.

Torque the bolts to 35 ft-lbs

Left: 2017-2020 OEM bolt Right: #010510307 bolt

- Start the engine in a well ventilated area, confirm there's no leak. With the 10mm socket, install the tips. Torque is 66 in-lbs

Enjoy the result !

I hope it will help you out
