Books I spent hundreds of dollars on only to maybe read a chapter out of them, if that.

And now they're probably next to worthless.

Bummer. I saved just about every note I took on every subject and have re-read many of the books.

With all the hoarding talk, I can admit I am a hoarder. I hoard food. Growing up, I remember having mustard/hot sauce sandwiches at the end of the month. My freezers are full of chickens and steak. Now that I have a walk in pantry for the first time in my life, I keep it stocked. I will not eat hamburger helper again.

I never re-read my notes, even when in college. Guess that's why I am what I am.

Of my two brothers and sister, I was the only one to finish college. Today, we are all retired and all of them are worth much more that I am.

I'm debating whether I want to keep my heavy, hardcover 3-semester calculus book. But if I haven't picked it up since I finished multivariable calculus, then am I ever really going to pick it up later??

if it makes you feel better, you can use it for fire starting material. sometimes the color inks will tint the flames.

But seriously, I've professionally used many specific skills I learned in school; heat transfer, thermodynamics, vibration analysis, physical measurement, linear controls, blah blah blah... Had to review all that stuff to do the first order analysis. I haven't done much of that in the last decade, but still...

Yeah, it's definitely tricky. For software engineering it's the same thing. Plenty of successful, non-university grads. I know someone who was an early engineer at Uber, despite dropping out. They're basically a millionaire.

Honestly I wasn't a great note taker. I somewhat haven't minded saving books, especially the math ones, because I felt like someday I'd like to re-visit them without the pressure of grades and such.

But all this material is on the internet in various forms now too.
