FWIW, we bought a set of very cheap wedding rings. We both went into marriage with our eyes wide open knowing many don't make it. We were also not well off financially.

I promised her a large rock and matching band if we made it to our 25th. She received those 3 years ago!

Both time we went together. Whatever works for both of you is best.

Dont waste money on wedding and shit, use that money for honey moon and traveling together. Build memories with her ASAP and take shit ton of pictures too

We never went ring shopping. She has my great gandmother's rings. They are about 120 years old and although very simple the sentimental value of them is huge.

I got lucky, my wife's engagement ring cost me $150. We didn't have a pot to piss in back then and I was stressed out on how to get a ring. I figured I'd have to go in debt. Then a family friend who knew about our situation gave us a 1 carat solitaire ring. The friend didn't want it; it was her ex-mother in laws ring that was willed to her. She said to her ex that she didn't want it, and her ex said he didn't want it, so it was just sitting in her jewelry box. We took the stone out and had a custom ring made. Yep, 1 carat ring for $150. The wife loves it.

Used to be 2 months when people made decent wages and were less retarded. My gf would rather have a nice watch that's at least more functional than this.

I guess I lucked out... no engagement ring required. Our wedding bands are simple, designed to take a beating and wear for a lifetime - went with titanium, because it's not brittle like carbide and not too soft like gold.

Then again, anyone that was superficially attached to an over-the-top bit of bling to show off to friends probably would not be my type. Especially if I had to spend 2-3 months salary. And doubly so if it's for a diamond. Though I assisted on a custom ring with a $10k (in 1998) diamond, and I have to admit it was pretty. Just not $10k worth. But it deserved a setting that let the light in, because it did magic with light.

Best of luck @Cole - you know the tastes and expectations of your chosen partner better than we do.

Remember, two things factor into cost on a stone; size, and quality. Most people only understand size; a dirty poor quality stone that's huge will be ooh'd and ahh'd over more than a really fine quality gem. Also, I can not recommend financing - if you want to spend more, save more. Though a surprising number of rings are returned, unaccepted... consider two rings; one for the surprise, one for the bling, but chosen together... if the choosing has potential to be troublesome.

Also consider running away to a hermit hut somewhere in the wild northlands... just to have your bases covered.

My second (and present) marriage, we flew off to Las Vegas, got hitched and returned with the video. Showed the video to my father-in-law, as he sat back in his easy chair, in his den, drinking a beer ........ he said "that was the best damn wedding I've ever been to".
