I don't know how you all had your batteries last so long. My oem died in less than a year!

Another option, knowing vehicle will not be used for many days, disconnect it's battery. (Also helpful for those who have vehicle too distant from an electrical outlet)


Obviously they last a lot longer when there's almost no drain.


Immediately requires just an end wrench. (spanner)


To make it easier for the future, Google...Auto battery disconnect, cutoff, or knife blade switch. a cheap fix once you can get to an auto parts store or order online.


Installing a battery disconnect, always install on NEGATIVE battery terminal.

Why is the 86, battery-wise, or for any other reason, any less useful during a lockdown than other cars?

Most cars are boring! You might miss going places, but not driving the car specifically. For us it's different. A bit of a stretch maybe, but first thing I thought of lol.

Also, my OEM battery is going into it's fifth year of service. Still kicking strong. I'll get it tested before winter *shrug*.

Whatever the parasitic draw is that drains these car's so fast can't work if not hooked up. I had my 58 Ford sit in the driveway for years and every single time I hooked the battery up to start it it would crank once and fire up. Same with my boat that sits all winter with the battery just unhooked. When there is no draw a battery can hold a charge for months and months.

Maybe batteries are like having sex with women, they are all good, some are just better than others?

The OEM battery in my 2013 FR-S is still going strong. Up until a few weeks ago, I would fire it up seven times a day (to make short school runs and one carry out run) The last few weeks, it gets fired up once a day to make a carry out run and twice on one day during the week for a grocery run.

I guess I got a good one.

But when the battery is disconnected/reconnected these cars go into limp/relearn fuel trim mode and drive like a vegetable for the next 200kms.
My original 2013 oem battery is still going strong and i only drive brz once a week.

That reminds me of one winter day, back in Connecticut, when I got up that Saturday morning my thermometer read 18 degrees F below zero. I tried to start my MG, which was garaged, no start. My 2015 FR-S (delivery in early Oct. 2014) just was delivered to California with its original battery. It came off the transporter after 2 weeks of non-use and started right up. This vehicle was a 70k mile daily driver that was parked outside during 6 New England winters. Damn fine battery for me.

I've always replaced standard batteries with sealed Optima red top units. One of the first things I do for ever car. Yeah, it might be a little unnecessary but it eliminates a need to worry about related issues for a LONG time. In fact I've never kept a car long enough for it to become an issue. I've never had an Optima run down even in 1970's cars. I just left my car sitting for six weeks and it cranked like I'd just driven it yesterday. If your battery is failing you then it's probably just time for a new one. Those little Panasonics are okay but there are better replacements.

I haven't seen a "standard" top up battery in years.. Still get them??

I have been using Braille 21 after the stock battery since last couple years. It can last at least a week without driving and driving half an hour a day is enough to keep it charged all year, summer and winter in the north east. I will buy again whenever need replacement.
