Foot slipped off clutch when starting car, grinding noise and check engine light :D
Hey all, guess I'm the unlucky first to be making a trouble post here.
So just got my car today. Was gonna get in and go for a drive. Depressed the clutch and hit the start button, as the car was cranking my foot slipped off because I dropped something. As my foot slipped off, I heard a grinding noise come from the flywheel area. The car didn't start and threw a check engine light. It started up fine right after and is currently running and driving perfectly. I scanned the code and it was P0340. I cleared it and it hasn't come back in over 100mi of driving. Should I be concerned about anything here? What would make a grinding noise when cranking the car? The car was in neutral and not in gear when this happened. Thanks |

Was it in gear when your foot slipped? Starter gear slipped off the flywheel? I'm sure it's fine. Would take a lot more than a clutch dump to do any real damage.

https://www.hella.com/techworld/us/T...n-sensor-3899/
"The task of the camshaft sensor is to work with the crankshaft sensor to define the exact position of the crankshaft drive. Through the combination of both sensor signals, the engine control unit knows when the first cylinder is in the top dead point. This information is needed for three purposes: For the start of injection during sequential injection. For the actuation signal of the solenoid valve for the pump-nozzle injection system. For cylinder-selective knocking control." The camshaft if probably fine. It likely threw an error for whatever reason owing to the way that you stalled the car. The grinding was probably the engine continuing to fire, leading to something torqueing against the transmission being in gear and causing something to slip in a way it shouldn't. It could also just be psychological. You didn't hear anything other than the engine dying. The car is most certainly fine. If the engine and clutch can take a few 7K RPM clutch dumps without breaking (not recommended), stalling while starting is unlikely to break anything. |

Well now, you aren't the first person that has tried to "start" a car that is already running -
![]() After you grind all the teeth off the starter, it won't grind no more. Seriously, pay attention to what you are ah doen when driven your car - ![]() (jest ah messen wich ya - ![]() I remember the time when I was a kid about 10 years old, I was backing up this Oliver steel wheeled tractor, so as my grandpa could attach the clevis on the drawbar of the tractor to the hitch on a disk (ground working implement). Well, my foot slipped off the clutch, as I was leaning back to see how close I was and the tractor lunged backwards, trapping my grandfather's leg between the disk and the drawbar. He let out quite a yell so I pulled the tractor up and jumped off. He had me tie a bandana around his upper leg to slow the bleeding. Then I ran up to the farmhouse and got my mom and she drove him into town to the doctor to get his leg bandaged up and a cast put on it. Fucking, NOBODY was happy with me, not my grandfather who was on crutches, nor my mother who had to hear my grandfather moan all the way to town, nor my dad who was having a hard time cleaning the blood out of his brand new Desoto. THE END |

When @humfrz doesn't have a random story to tell, it will be a sign of the apocalypse.
Other signs include a raining toads, the moon blocking the sun, and AI removing the pixilation from Japanese porn.
