Whats the issue with 19 inch wheels?
Hey guys was just wondering why there aren't as many 19 inch wheels on the 86's as there are 18's. Is it because its impractical? taste? or just too much of a hassle?
I personally was considering purchasing 19's but just wanted some input from the masses as to why they arent popular. Thanks |

They're heavy, much higher rotational inertia, they're expensive, tires are expensive, they look a bit wagonwheelesque, and they make stock brakes look absurdly puny.

I'd say for different reasons. Taste, Price, Available sizes/styles, Weight etc

Add in ease of wheel damage considering the small profile tire needed to fit them

19s make sense if you're making a slammed show car with giant bling-blinging brakes.

According to the suspension experts, 17 inch wheels were chosen for a reason. The larger sidewalls act as part of the suspension. With this car, buying 19 inch wheels is sabotaging the handling.

Yup, potholes and curbs become 1000x more threatening. The tires themselves are also more susceptible to damage. Relatively minor pothole impact can become a wheel and tire destroying event.

My perspective has always been larger wheels look better. My plan was to purchase 19" wheels for my BRZ, and for the longest time I thought everyone saying 18's were perfect didn't know what they were talking about, and that 19's filled the wheel well better. But then I saw some 19's in person and they made the car look ghetto DUB fabulous, which isn't my style. I'm not saying there aren't any 19's that look good on the car, but I've since realized a full faced 18" wheel fits the FT86 proportions perfectly, and with a drop the car can look better than with 19's.
Aside from aesthetics, as others have stated, acceleration and handling will suffer due to heavier weight and higher rotational inertia, and the lower profile tires will provide a much harsher ride and provide less protection for the wheel. But ultimately do whatever makes you happy, not what makes the forum's happy. 19's can look overly large on the FT86... |

In some cases they look great. The Rocket Bunny car in my signature is one of the only examples of 19" looking good. I think it looks quite big on the car, and plus there are a lot more options in 18" with tires being less expensive. Why go bigger when you've already got great options in 18"?
