I only have a few complaints about the SBD kit.

1. The exhaust fasteners are very low quality, but that's almost universal among aftermarket exhaust manufacturers, and is becoming more common with OEM's

2. It turns an otherwise 5-minute belt job into a 4+ hour ordeal with many non-reusable parts.

3. The piping is nice and thick/durable but some parts ship with weld distortion that makes them fail to line up when assembled. The downpipe flange to pipe joint geometry means some of the nuts won't turn (because they collide with the pipe) unless you lift the downpipe off of the turbo flange, start the threads at the same time, and alternate tightening them until they hit the flange. It's nit-picking, but it easily more than triples the assembly time.... And you have to take it apart to do the belt.

Otherwise, it's ok for the price and makes good power with a very nice boost curve. The MHI 20G is a respectable turbo.

For my money, JDL makes much better parts, their quality control is excellent, they make it here in the US, and they will absolutely make it right immediately if something fails to fit or leaks due to quality control/manufacturing issues. SBD did eventually make the manifold flex joint issue right, and revised the kit, but comparing the two quality control situations, JDL does a significantly better job.

So happy with the results. With an invidia over pipe and catted down pipe into stock exhaust I made 300whp on Ptunings dyno. The car pulls a little harder then a stock SRT8 392 Challenger and a 5.0 Mustang.

Normal low rpm driving there is NO powerloss or lag - mid rpm dip is completely gone. My favorite thing is going down the highway at 3k rpms and giving it 1/4 gas and just taking off.

One of the tricks SBD did is on the full length header the pipe diameter is smaller. This allows more low end power 2-3k and allows quicker spool up. My datalogs show 7 psi of boost at just 4k rpms. 3500 to 4000rpm is the best part of the car now.

My gas mileage went from 29.4 avg to 28.5. Really nice blow off valve.

Cons: - the turbo jacket is a little cheap. They don't supply a tee and vacuum lines for the BOV - The exhaust wrap with the kit is horrible, you will need to buy better wrap.
Fair assessment.

There are higher quality turbo blankets on the market, 100%, but we were able to include this item starting in 2016 for FREE. There was ZERO upcharge in the kit, so keep that in mind.

The Vacuum Tee + 1/4" hose is about $5 worth of hardware, available at any auto parts store. I'll see what I can do about adding it moving forward, as a convenience item.

In regards to the exhaust wrap included, that's actually meant for the downpipe only...as it's closest to the factory fans. I don't feel wrapping the exhaust manifold is necessary, as I have never found the need to wrap my own car...(which is the first kit ever installed.) Therefore we don't include enough wrap to wrap the manifolds, but the customer is welcome to source on their own.

Obviously we're trying to keep the price point at $2999, and we're having to make some concessions to do so. Ultimately, you're out about another $5 for the universal vacuum tee + hose.

It still remains the Turbo Kit value leader in the FT86 market.

If JDL is back to $3700...$700 additional goes a long way in accessory upgrades & buys you our "complete kit"...which adds:

1.) SBD 2.5" Catless Overpipe + Front Pipe
2.) Pre-Welded Oil Pan
3.) Drift Armor Bar.

Friend of mine has an SBD kit, my kit is heads and tails higher quality. They used to 4854s...that's what I have. The charge piping is so short though the response is still great. If you want to stay with HRI though, he told me he refuses to tune JDL.

I already talked to him he'll tune it. The MAF placement on the no cut version is better. Its the regular versions he doesn't like to tune.

4831 is the base turbo. I asked for a size up to the 5431 .63 a/r which is 500hp rated. Never heard of the 4854... The first number is compressor mm not sure what the second number means..

Gotcha. Yeah the longer charge piping version didn't exist when I made my purchase. To me the MAF placement is no different than Greddy/SBD/Full Race/MAPerformance No hard feelings harbored though, James is a really cool guy. I ended up going through Delicious and I'm very satisfied with my tune....although there is a certain peace of mind knowing that your car has been tuned in person. Once I jump to flex fuel I may go through Circuit Motorsports over by you in Orlando.

Precisions are numbered by Compressor wheel inducer and then Turbine Wheel Exducer sizes. It's very similar in size spec to a disco potato;

Cool yep thanks for the info. James almost never turns anyone down kinda surprised. Circuit is a good option be my 2nd if James wasn't around anyways those guys are experienced too. Tune fa20s pretty often as well. I guess to those that don't know of HRI. James told me he has already tuned a no cut version it was fine he said. The turbo looks small mines rated at 500 hp bc 54mm comp I guess.

How is your spool and boost threshold btw? I assume mine might be a little bit laggier but I'm I guess my turbine is smaller hope it doesnt creep...

You should see our latest variant

We continue to make changes and improve the kits with every production run.

The new 500X Ball-Bearing kits are HARD to beat @ $3499.

I have the SBD kit. Its ok but looking to uninstall it and perhaps get a different FI kit.

I have had too many issues with exhaust leaks and carbon monoxide leaking into the cabin. The quality of the kit is mediocre.... you get what you pay for.

If I had to do it over again, I'm not sure I would get the SBD kit again. The price was attractive but it has caused me too many headaches.

Did you have an earlier kit? Seems most of the issues are sorted now with maybe the exception of the Bov leaks. I personally went JDL
