There are only a handful that do this well.
I can set mine to record when there is motion in front of the camera (not the same as some where its activated if the car moves) without having it powered by the car. The internal battery seems to last all day without a problem in this mode, it only records 15-20 seconds of video, or until the motion stops.

Again, I have the ojo cam.

Which model? Sounds more like what I'm looking for (no hardwiring)

You can also get an external battery bank too. That way you can pick a camera you like and not forced to use 1 or 2 kinds

I have this one:

http://www.ojocam.com/ojocam-pro-das...act-detection/

There is a "bargain basement" one for $89 that has most of the same features, I just like the GPS functionality.

Yup, the hardware looks the same, i wonder what the difference in software is like.

If its basically the same, whoops, look like I overpaid a bit

Yeah, there are a few with this too. I forgot I discounted those due to winter battery performance. there's basically constant motion where my wife parks for the gym so think 90-120 minutes of recording. I may still have to supplement the car battery, we'll see how out goes.

As far as it has a motion detection mode, yes. Not sure if its triggered by vibration (if your car gets hit), but it does work. Just take a good look at the manual and it will show you how to do it.

Word of warning--putting it in this mode makes recording kinda funky when you are on the road, as in it doesn't necessarily start recording as soon as you turn on your car (this is what happens when in "normal" mode).

That said, I'd still recommend this camera.

Is it easy to change on the fly? Meaning switch it over to motion detection mode when you park?

Depends on how you have it mounted, mine is up high on the windshield behind the mirror, so its not the easiest for me to get to. But you have to go into the main menu and switch it over. So, if you know exactly what to do, probably could be done in less than a minute. So not an on/off switch, but not totally impractical.

One last thing--be *very* careful mounting the base--I can tell you from experience that its a total bitch to get off if you mess up.
