Update Round 2: Toyota dealer called me today saying they are waiting for a Toyota tech to arrive on Friday before they do anything. I'm rocking the 2012 Camry SE. I have driven the Camry loaners (this time different dealership) too much.
Knock on wood, the BRZ has run perfectly so far.

Talked to my service mgr. and corporate yesterday.

So my service manager sends me a text yesterday that says "Toyota is no longer able to give an ETA for the ECM. Apparently, they are swampedwith orders and are having to issue them in the order the affected cars came in. Not trying to be vague, but there is no way at this time to give an accurate arrival time."

Less than five minutes later, my case manager calls me. She tells me that she just talked to my service manager, and he told her that he is expecting the ECM in either Thursday or Friday of this week. I explained about the text, and she tells me that she just talked to him about a minute before she called me, and that he had gotten new information since the text was sent (from the parts manager, supposedly). I asked her to please talk with him and to get the story straight between them, because I am getting tired of the conflicting stories. She said that she would and that I Should expect a follow up call on Friday.

Getting annoyed here, I am really beginning to think that I made a mistake with my purchase.

I feel ya man. Just hang in there; we all bought this car knowing that there will be kinks...
At the end of the day I'm sure we all still love the car for what it is... Remember, our frustration is not with the vehicle itself but the dealerships incompetent employees giving us misleading information about the situation.

That's why choosing the right dealership to buy from is so important...

Update on my case:
Dealer called me around 16.00h, my car was ready.
Fastest repair ever? Car was in the shop for three days.
They replaced the VVTI system or something, closest to the driver. Told him I contacted Toyota themselves for this issue. He said there's probably going to be a recall or some sorts in the future (if I'm correct). Wouldn't be surprised, they didn't do anything to the ECU (as expected). Forgot to ask which code my car threw, but I was just happy to get my car back

Car runs great, they've only added around 10KM on the car, I forgot what a joy it is to drive. Idle's fine now, something I've noticed is that's easier to stall it now, you have to give it more gas to get it going from a standstill. Could be my imagination but yeah, I've only added 15KM on it so far, so I will drive it some more next week.
Next stop: car wash

Nothing from Toyota yet, I wonder if they will contact me again...

OP: status repaired (for now)

That's just it, I think the guy @ the dealership is telling me the truth at this point, but the case manager is trying to keep me happy. I AM hanging in there, but I can't help but let my frustration out a little. After all, a lot of us are in the same boat, and misery loves company, or at least to bitch to the other miserable bastards in the room...

No new FR-S for me

I would like to thank everyone who has posted on this thread because reading the horror stories has kept me from a purchase this morning. The largest Toyota dealer in Central Virginia has a red and a blue automatic and all I had to do was choose which one. after staying up till 1 am reading these posts I went to the dealer with print outs of these posts and other articles online about this problem. the salesman dismissed it as lies and "people jumping on the bandwagon" of a select few problems. the head of the service department knew nothing of this problem and said they have had no complaints out of 18 to 20 sales there. he said Toyota has not informed them of anything but a possible fuel pump problem.
I feel with all that has been written about this problem on this car, it would have been better to hear that at least they knew it existed. This is a huge dealership. the Vin #s on both these cars start with 709XXX and one was made August 22nd according to the salesman.
Although this would be a second car for me, i still decided not to chance it right now. Do you think I've been too hasty in saying no to the sale ? thanks....Charles

I don't understand... How can it be lies if people are actually having these real problems? I would skip that dealership just because of their attitude and ignorance. They're only there to make a sale off you; when a problem comes up, don't expect these dealers to help...cause they won't. That being said, don't let the one dealer drive you away from purchasing a vehicle.

I contacted a local Subaru dealer about the crickets TSB and getting my HPFP replaced. I also asked them about the idle CEL/VVTI issue and while they were aware of it, they have not had any cars come in with the issue. They have sold 8 BRZs so far. Obviously people aren't lying, it's a real issue, and I would stay away from that dealer.

My advice hampersnow; wait a couple of months, wait till next year.
And lies? Lol, I can post a pic of my car in seconds if you want it. Fact of the matter is, my car was at the shop for three days with CEL/SL combo. These 150 owners on the first page are a fact.

Wow thats crazy that he would say that we we're all lying..Theres tons of pictures that show the repair orders and what was done. He was basically being a salesman and telling you whatever he can to sell you a car. While the list is growing alot of people's repairs are being completed. With any car you buy whether it being toyota, nissan, honda etc theres always a chance of an issue coming up. So far my FRS experience has been worth it, i love driving this car! Theres a slight bug that is slowly but surely working itself out.
here my service report just in case he thinks im lying lol
(sorry for bad quality)

Smart move, I wouldn't buy it with an Automatic transmission either.

Seriously, If it is a second car, what's it hurt if it does have a problem? You may get something free from it (not herpes).
