Two new RWD Sports cars to join FR-S?
http://www.autoblog.com/2013/08/09/n...a-sports-cars/
http://www.caradvice.com.au/245716/t...ve-sports-car/ I know these rumors have been going on for a while now. Lets hope its becoming closer to reality. An all new MR-2 would be amazing but I just cant see something like being below the FR-S. It would have to be a step below the MR-S to fit in that category. A rwd celica would sort of fit that category. Maybe the next gen TC will be RWD. Kind of like Fredric Aasabo's formula d car which we all know is very successful in formula d. |

Toyota considering an entry-level, rear-wheel drive sports car
Yes 86 is not the entry level according to new reports!
Toyota considering an entry-level, rear-wheel drive sports car Would slot below the GT 86 Toyota 86 chief engineer Tatsuya Tada has revealed the company is considering an entry-level sports car to slot below the 86. Speaking to CarAdvice, Tada said both he and Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda want a three sports car lineup but neither the entry-level model or the Supra successor have been approved for production. Despite this, Tada said the model would ride on an all-new rear-wheel drive platform and could be co-developed with another automaker. When asked about the price pressures an entry-level sports car would face, Tada said the company has "learnt a lot from [the] 86 project and Toyota has much experience in terms of technology and development in the way we develop vehicles efficiently and cost effectively." ![]()

How much more entry level can you get? Everyone's complaining about lack of power and cheapness of the interior.

If chevy can sell a Turbo Sonic for $16k there is plenty of room for an entry level rwd car. The FRS is expensive because of the FR layout, drivetrain (the FA20 is an expensive engine, as is the Asin tranny, and torsen diff), the obsession with low cog, 200hp/2L out of an NA boxer, and ULEV-ishness. Take a Sonic with its Turbo 1.4L and put the engine/transaxel in the rear. Instant entry level rwd sportscar. Think budget MR-S.

Wouldn't this be the two seat MR2 concept they've already eluded too?

Maybe the new sports car should drop down to maybe just under 20k? MRSP: 19,995.
Car should be lighter, and power should be like 180HP? |

Maybe something Miata-esk, but no frills like the FR-S? I wanted a Miata, but it was too much for too little car (pun kind of intended).

The sub-FT86 car was announced a few years ago. It was first really started by Naruse with some input from some kids or young adults, IDK exactly. After Naruse died in a tragic accident, Toyota announced they would build it in his memory. He was really pushing for it's production and was very enthusiastic about it.
http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/10/r...morate-naruse/ The prototype Naruse lead the design on was a hatch with a smaller engine (1.5L) from a Daihatsu. Focus is on lightweight, cheap, simple, less power, and performance. No idea if they plan on selling it here, but doubtful. My guess is that it won't be much smaller, physically, but lower market. With the Scion marketing for the US(lol) the only way it could make sense here is to either make it a more "pure" (roadster) or make it taller and give it more interior room (hatchback). My guess is the hatchback. |
