Car Name; Reason why FT-86 won't stick - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

The reason the name FT-86 probably won't stay the same once this car is released word wide is because of the acronym... FT is Future Toyota.

Thus, anyone have any clues what the Toyota version will be called outside of Scion/NA?

Celica would make sense, but it's a shame North America won't get the name...

Who here actually knows what "AE" in AE86 stands for?

I bet FT86 ends up sticking. At least for a certain niche of enthusiasts. And a certain group of idiots that don't know what it stands for.

A for the A series engine (4A-GE)
E for the Chassis (E = Corolla, A = Supra..and Celica [gen 1-3], T = Celica [4th gen forward], P = Sport 800, Starlet, [U]P Yaris/Vitz, W = MR-2 etc)

sooo if it was a celica...they could potentially keep it ft86 as the chassis code....it would fit then?

F = (FB20)
T = Celica
8 = 8th generation
6 = 6th variation from the concept model

However, I feel that given Toyota's penchant for super-original names, it will be the FR-S everywhere. Relative of the MR-S, naturally.

I still can't believe that Jack Hollis douche made a big deal about Scion not going with the flow, or being edgy or whatever he said, about naming the concept the FR-S. Sheesh.

If Toyota insists on silly nameless names, I would call it the Scion fR here, and the Toyota FR-S elsewhere.
