about 80% of the ring sealing takes place in the first hour of running the engine,

The loss in power from an easy break-in and the resulting poor ring seal can be anywhere from 2% - 10% !!

I will listen to the people that designed and built the engine thank you very much.

Is there an official recommendation from Subaru on break-in? I never dug through the manual to find out since I bought mine used.

I actually looked in my manual the other day looking for this info.
In the Canadian spec model it says 1600km of easy driving and the usual gibberish of dont exceed 80km/h for extended periods of time, dont go over 4k rpm, etc. I think all cars say the same thing, except the total kms would probably the only value that varies per car.

Sounds like pretty antiquated CYA verbiage considering all engines are dyno’d at the factory these days. If anything I would take it easy on the transmission and diff for the first few thousand rather than the engine.

They are dynoed for 10 seconds (if at all) so not exactly a break in.
What are they covering their ass for? Early failure? They don't care what happens when it is out of warranty so if the break in is "not needed" then why is a CYA for early failure situation?
No doubt all the usual bunk of "Oh it doesn't matter and this way is far better because it worked on my rebuilt bike engine" is going to get thrown around as usually when this subject comes up but I guess it is the same bunch of people that think the designers knew nothing anyway.
Everybody just do as you please.
Then we will hear all the whining from the same group that the engines are no good because they leak or burn oil or anything else that can't possibly be because they knew better than the people that built it!

OUT.

It's all a sham. I'm too simple to ever buy into that kind of crap. I'd quit before agreeing to design a deceptive device.

it's just general 'break-in' procedures that every user manual has. it's not specific to engine break-in. whether or not the engine actually needs a break-in, only the engine designers can tell you that.

like anything, products are designed for the lowest common denominator, e.g., doesn't read owners manual or know anything about cars. just drive the car as you wish.

Hey it's true that it takes combustion pressure to press the rings into the cylinder wall.

That's why I spent my first tank/night with my 86 doing 1-2-3 gear firm (not wot) pulls to high RPMS (not red line, shift ligfht set just past 6k) and engine braking 3-2-1 back down.

And doing it again

And doing it again

And if I was on a road that didn't allow it I was running up and down 3-4-5 and back down constantly. Combustion pressure to seat the rings, engine braking to pull some oil through the rings, lubricate and cool them down, more pressure to seat them, more cool down, etc. Not wot, just firm. and over a few hours, not over 5 minutes on a dyno.

A race engine might be happy being born like this

But that's a bit... stout... for a street car.

i run diesel fuel through the car every other tank.

helps with seating the rings, and no problems yet!
