That was quite the doorprize! Didn't realize it was a FRS/BRZ specific kit.

oil cooler

Hi Evan . My car budget is blown for the year ( just ordered weathertek floor liners for both of our cars) however, if you haven't sold it by next spring I will definitely be interested. Wouldn't it help your turbo build though?

@dolo, nice prize.

On the topic of oil coolers, this seems to be another topic that is hotly debated, pun intended.

I can see if you are going FI that adding an oil cooler is probably a good idea because of the increased power/temperatures and since you are outside of the warranty space anyways the risk of an oil line leaking causing a failure is offset by the benefit of the cooler.

But for us NA guys I'm still not clear on the benefit. @Slick, I don't believe you run one and @AznKirby can vouch for how hard you drive.

That said, I'm thinking a Forester style cooler/warmer might be a good addition, even if it only lowers the temps by a few degrees. The version where they connect into the throttle body looks promising since it is a much simpler mod than the other route.

I think an oil cooler should be on the list for someone tracking regularly, sometimes I think I'm flirting with danger in not running one yet. I tried to log data at the last track day but didn't do it right, but will try again to look at oil temps this weekend. I also don't use high $ oils, just the standard Toyota-spec synth. But at 54K now, other than a leaking cam cover the engine is still running strong (thank you Subaru for resolving STi engine issues).

Norm was running that OEM cooler on his car. It is a pretty clean install and also has the benefit of warming the oil on winter use as it goes in sync with coolant temps.

I am considering the same cooler, just a different routing for the engine coolant than the other install, so it will also head the oil in winter.

Nobody has posted any data from the track for that particular setup, but even if it lowers the temp by a few degrees it's better than a kick in the head.

PTuning uses some fancy laminar oil cooler to keep the front more open for the intercooler and water rad. I will scoop that one if/when I get their kit.

The gf is on board for me spending a few extra grand and going from the Jackson SC kit to the PTuning kit. Just need to save some more pennies, a lot more pennies..... lol

I'm going to look into the usefulness of the cooler and I might pick it up from you as I plan on going supercharger

This was pointed out to me at work by someone - we were discussing the use of ethanol in gas and the for the FRS/BRZ we have been told to use Shell 91 V-Power or Petro Can 94 because no ethanol is used in them, however the following was sent to me after the conversation:

http://retail.petro-canada.ca/en/independent/2056.aspx

"Does Ultra 94 contain ethanol? Does Petro-Canada still offer an ethanol-free gasoline?
Ultra 94 contains ethanol. Due to the fact that various fuel grades are blended at the point of sale, most grades of Petro-Canada fuel may now contain up to 10% ethanol. This represents a change from the previous state, where premium fuel was ethanol-free at Petro-Canada."

Is that true? Seems to be so from thier own website.

Shell V-Power 91:

http://www.shell.ca/en/products-serv...power/faq.html

FAQ #2 "Shell V-Power premium gasoline in Canada does not contain ethanol."

The factory unit from the forester is relatively easy install, but just be aware that it functions less as a cooler and more of a stabilizer. It reduces the temp spikes but over a 25-30 min session oil temps still climb to the 230 mark. I'll check my logs and get you guys an accurate number.

It's certainly worth having in my opinion for the ease of install and lower cost of installation.
