I got them from Kenneth on this forum, KI_ZN6 is his handle I think. Update: Battery is running fine after over 2+ years. Car HAS to be started on the 3rd day of not using it, otherwise it will run flat. No problem if you connect it up to a trickle charger though.

Stock battery died in the cold. So I am thinking about the Lawn and Garden or a Miata battery.

If you are going to be running larger speakers, a sub and led lighting, what is the best battery to upgrade to? (Not in terms of weight but in terms of power, ie not dimming the headlights while turning on the radio) Thanks!

So my stock battery has been giving me trouble now that my car is 4 years old. The stealership wants $160 to replace it. My plan was to buy one from the local auto parts store and just replace it myself, but was told that if I do it it will mess with my electronics. Anyone know what this is all about? It seems like a ploy to force me to buy from the dealer. Any advice?

So if I'm getting this right, I won't have any issues by buying a battery at the local parts store and doing an exchange in my own right? Thanks for the information!

Get proper battery. Undo brackets and clamps Remove old battery Put new battery in tray Replace brackets and clamps Won't lose radio settings but ECU will have to relearn your driving. Not an issue since the solution to half the electronic issues is to unhook the battery for a minute anyway.

Remedial battery info:
As long as you get a 12v battery, you can use ANY battery and it cannot harm your car. There has to be enough CCA (Cold Cranking Amperage) to start the car, so going too small is useless. It seems obvious but explains why some lawn mower batteries may not work. Lesser CCA batteries will not last as long as the OEM battery should (all else being equal). Lifefespan of the battery- Smaller (low CCA) batteries will not last as long because they have less reserve capacity and have to work harder to crank the engine. Every crank takes a little out of a battery. Also cranking in the cold can be an issue with lower CCA batteries. Heat kills batteries, cold exposes weak batteries. In hot climates lower CCA batteries will have an even shorter lifespan and heat can mess with AGM batteries even worse so a very light low CCA AGM battery in a hot climate won't last very long. It is what it is- you'll just have to buy them more often. That's the price you pay for performance. If you care about battery weight you probably have a manual anyway so a dead battery every year just means you'd better know how to bump start (or have a jump box around.) For the smaller batteries you'll have to fashion a decent hold down. There are battery hold down kits that are expensive, but honestly you can buy a couple of hooks and a bracket and drill the battery tray for a hold down that will cost a lot less. Vibration and moving around kill batteries and also will destroy your battery terminals. Make sure it is secured tightly. A rubber mat under the battery- like ones that Honda uses- will help to keep the vibration down and make the battery less likely to slide around in an over-sized battery tray designed for a Group 35 holding something much smaller. Make sure the hold down is well clear of the positive terminal. |
